F.

Goodrich Rubber Company's" statisticians, -who have compiled their records from January 1 totals computed by the registrars of each State. Motor vehible production for 1927 is estimated at 3,530.000, indicating a heavy replacement business. This figure added to the registration figures for 1926 gives a total of 25,603,643. Since 1927 registration returns show only 23,579,002 motor vehicles in use, the difference, or 2,224,641. would indicate the number of motor cars scrapped or discarded.

Replacements during the year -were B.4 per cent of the total registration. New York Is First New York State still holds first place in number of motor vehicles, but California is running a very close eecond. New York's percentage of increase was 9.8, while California's registration climbed only 5.5 per cent. OB the other hand California possesses a motor vehicle for every two inhabitants, or an average of two per family, which is figured at 4.6 persons, while New York posseses one ear for every 6.2 persons, or not quite one car per family. For the first time in the history of the automotive industry four States Bhowed a drop in registration.

Florida leads with a loss of 10.4 per cent over 1926. Maine was second -with a loss of 5.8 per cent. The District of Columbia made the highest gain of any State with 17.5 Ier cent increase in registration. Mississippi takes second place in percentage of gain -with 13.9 per cent Increase to its credit. It is coincident that the percentage of increase in three States was identical to the percentage of increase obtained in 1926.

New York, Maryland and New Hampshire each showed the same-- percent of increase in 1927 fcs was shown'iir 1929. One Car Per Family Taking the registration total and dividing it into the estimated population of the United States shows car for every 9.4 persons, or approximately one car per family. The 4927 registration total also provides 7.9 motor cars for every square mile of area in the United States. HARRISBURG, Jan. automobile owners, resort and hotel proprietors today studied the -H-. system announced by the State Department of Highways in an effort to determine how the new markings fit into the Federal road system. Under the new system the majority of the State's highways will become part of twenty-six United States routes. The new system for numbering also will replace the official state designations such as Lincoln and William Penn Highways.

Officials of the State -highway de- partment said that co-ordination -with. Federal authorities will facilitate inter-state travel. Designation of Federal routes and the use of standard markers, erection of which will start immediately, was done in accordance with the recommendations of a committee representing the American Association of State Highway officials in cooperation with the Federal bureau of public roads. Under the new system Lincoln Highway, old route No. 1, will be U.

S. route 30 from the Ohio State line west of Harshaville, to Philadelphia. From Philadelphia to Norristown it will be U. S. No.

No. 219, northward to the New York state line north of Bradford. The Buffalo-Pittsburgh Highway, route No. 10. will be U.

S. No. 119 from the intersection with the William Penn Highway East of Blnirs- ville, and from DuBois northward to No. 422 from Reading WPhiladelphia. The Buchanan Trail, Route 44, which enters Pennsylvania one mile of Emmitsburg, and runs from McConnellsburg and Mt.

Union will be No. 16. The William Flinn Highway, now No. 8 will be State traffic route No. 8 from Pittsburgh to Erie and U.
