JOHN EVANS. A unified Lutheran church 'r. America with more than 4.000.000 numbers was envisioned yesterday at tfce clone of the 24th annual sessions rf the National Lutheran council in Pittsburgh, Ta. The action, described a the moit definite yet taken by ary section of the country's Lutheran leadership, set up a committee to tiraft a plan to merge the various Lutheran communions. The Rev.

Dr. Armin G. Weng. 860 North Wabash avenue, president of the Illinois synod of the United Lutheran church, was elected secretary the National Lutheran council. Eight Synod In Council.

Included in the plan committee are tre presidents of the eight national Lutheran synods which make up the counciL These groups also embrace approximately two-thirds of all Lutherans the country. The council corresponds in general in American Lutheranism. with the Federal Coun cil of Churches of Christ in American Protestantism. It works in functional c-oeratlve areas for the eight groups ruth embrace a closely knit, active membership of approximately 2.500.000 persons. The eight roups are the United Lutheran church, the American Lutheran church, the Norwegian Lutheran church, the Lutheran Free church, the AuguMnna synod, the United Inuh church, the Icelandic 3 -nod.

and the Suoml I Finnish I an independent Finnish group nt Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, joined the council Wednesday. Divided in Three Group. American Lutheranism is divided at rrewr.t into three croups: the United Lutheran church, representing a merger about 20 years ago of several synods; the American Lutheran conference, which is a federation of five rational groups; and the Synodical conference, a similar federation of six groups. The Synodical conference is not represented in the National Lutheran council. The three groups have had commissions on Lutheran unity at work for several years under somewhat diverse authorization.

The focal point of attempts of these commissions was a of union on a formula relative to Inspiration of the Bible. Strategic churches in this attempt toward union were the Evangelical Lutheran Missouri synod of the nodical conference, and the American Lutheran rfcurch in the American Lutheran conference. Similar overtures have taken plare between the American Lutheran church and the United Lutheran eh arch-Aid for Service Men. "The f.rst function of the plan committee will be to promote united action among tie groups in wartime work, including services to men in armed forces, aid to war-orphaned foreign missions, and to American prisoners ef war and refugees. The council set aside $650,000 for war attivities and for short wave broadcasts to German occupied countries in definance to Hitler's ban on foreign radio listening.
