According to the policeman, Luongo struck him on the chest "two or three times" but no one came forward at the trial to support this charge. Judge John J. Greek Play Made 'New' AtUofH The University Players of the University of Hartford are presenting a "sock-it-to-me" version cf the ancient Greek comedy, "The Clouds" by Aristophanes. Much of the credit for the vitality of the production must go to Keith Brown who portrays Strepsiad9s. Brown's perform ance as the bclcgured old man unable to pav crcdi'nrs is! nicely sustained in a broad comic style. Brown has developed a total approach, verbally and visually, in his characterization.

He helps himself immeasurably in his comedy by his expert. phrasing of his long speeches, his mobile facial expressions add to the merrriment of the production and yet he avoids mugging for the sake of a few laughs. Dan Verdery Scores Dan Verdery as Pheidippides, son of Strepsiades, turns in a neat tour de force in his performance. In the early sections of the play, Verdery is a languid, bored effete young man who speaks in a courtly, diffident manner. In the course of the play Strepsiades enrolls his son in Socrates' "thinkery" in order that the young man might learn sophistry and confound people, particularly judges and.

lawyers. In this way Strepsiades believes he will be able to skipj out of his debts. However, Phei-j dippides, following his days in! the thinkery emerges as a wan, pot-smoking hippie who de-j plores his father. Verdery's, amusing "new" characteriza-l tion is reminiscent of some of; Marlon Brando's portrayals, David Nylin set out Scorates as the high priest of poppycock which is, of course, precisely what Aristophanes had in mind. Nylin sustained the satirical quackery of his characterization pretty well although I felt he' was experiencing some difficulties with his lines on opening night.

There are a number of good performances among the large cast including a clever sequence by Bob Dio who represents philosophy and argues for a return to the older and more strict methods of rearing the young in Athens. Mark Wallace has directed with a sharp eye for comedy and has sprinkled the production with good touches of comic business. When "The Clouds" is skimming along in its raucous, bawdy style the performance has an engaging elan. But there are sequences in the production which are long, verbose and devoid of much comedy. One wishes that Wallace had either cut some of these sterile sequences or festooned them with bits of comic business to keep the production in a completely mi iorm Key tnrougnout tne eve ning.

The Players' production con tinues through Sunday night at the Auerbach auditorium. If you would enjoy going "up, up and away" tor a refreshing trip in the world of updated ancient comedy, the Players' production of "The Clouds" may be just the vehicle tor you. -WILLIAM McCURDY There are some 32 000 post offices across the U.S.. but half of all mail is handled by 75 of the largest.
