He was executive vice president of the Ohio Coal association. From 1939 to 1949 he was chairman of the joint wage conference of coal operators and the United Mine Workers. He also was the first operator trustee on the board which administers miners'- welfare it GREAT LAKES IKER DIES IN TRUCK CRASH Navy Car and Hit-Run Vehicle Collide John Donovan, 55, of 318 Oak Waukegan, suffered fatal injuries yesterday when the navy carryall truck in which he was a passenger collided with a hit-run truck at Elston and Kedzie avs. and crashed into a utility pole. He died in Belmont hospital.

Donovan and Arthur Welch, 54, of 1516 North Waukegan, both civilian employes at Great Lakes naval training station, were moving south in Elston when, a witness told police, the other truck turned south in Elston from Kedzie, hit the navy truck driven by Welch, and fled. Welch suffered a possible skull fracture Jtnd internal injuries. Mrs. Perka Biga Milsovic, 51, of Cleveland, was killed yesterday when two autos collided at 79th st. and Roberts rd.i Bridgeview.

Cantwell, 38, of 4800 Woodland Western Springs, the other driver, were taken to Little Company of Mary hospital. A coroner's jury recommended that Sam Trammell, 47, of 1737 Adams be held to the grand jury on a charge of reckless homicide for the traffic death of Mrs. Edith Chapman, 54, of Shandon, Cal.

Their cars collided Sept. 20 at Augusta blvd. and Cicero av. when, witnesses said, Trammell ran a red traffic light Up to midnight Wednesday, 449 persons had been killed in traffic accidents in Cook county since Jan. 1.

Of these, 290 were killed in Chicago, where 24,109 were injured in the same period. AUGUSTUS HAND DIES; RETIRED FEDERAL JUDGE Middlebury, Vt, Oct. 28 Retired Judge Augustus Noble Hand, 85, of the United States Circuit Court of Appeals, second circuit, died here today while vacationing with Mrs. Hand. His home was in Eliza-bethtown, N.

Y. Judge Hand, whose court covered Connecticut, New York, and Vermont, was found dead in his hotel room bed. Death was due to natural causes. Hand first was appointed to the federal bench by President Wilson in 1914. He was a cousin of Judge Learned Hand, also of the Circuit court.

Learned retired in 1951. Augustus Hand was graduated from Harvard university in 1890. He served as a judge in the southern district of New York until President Coolidge elevated him to the Court of Appeals in 1927. Judge Hand heard the initial appeals in many important cases. Among these were the Alger Hiss con viction and contempt sentences.

TRAFFIC DEATHS IN NATION DROP FOR 9TH MONTH The National Safety council reported yesterday that traffic deaths in the United States dropped again in September, for the ninth consecutive month, despite increased mo tor travel. Fatalities last month totaled 3,020, bringing the total for the first nine months of 1954 to 25,770. This is 6 per cent under the toll for the corresponding 1953 period. The September toll is 7 per cent, under that for September, 1953.

EHLERS, LEADER OF PARLIAMENT IN BONN, DIES OLDENBURG, Germany, Oct. 29, Friday UP) Dr. Her mann Ehlers, 50, Christian atic president of West German bundestag lower house of parliament, died today following a tonsil operation.

His death Ehlers vacated a position of important leadership on the eve of the battle in the Bonn parliament over ratification of the Paris agreements restoring German arms. Ehler, a member of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer's party, was a leader in the campaign for a united Europe and German sovereignty. He was a former chairman of the party, and was in his second term as president of the bundestag. $606,138 VALUE PUT ON ESTATE OF CONCANNON The estate of Matthias Con-cannon, Chicago attorney who died June 28, 1953, at age 64, was placed at $606,138 in an in heritance tax return filed yes terday in County court. Federal estate tax was placed at $55,346 and Illinois inheritance tax at $18,211.

The return showed $266,145 of the net estate will go to the widow, Dagmar, 7321 South Shore and $208,273 will go to a son, Matthias Shawn Concannon, of the same address.
