Along this road is th lovely settlement of where a covered bridge, close to a white church in a mountain setting, offers a classic scene for photographers. The rocky, rounded summits of twin Percy Peaks are a 3418-foot landmark to the north, separating the valleys of Nash Stream and Phillips Brook, two prime wilderness trout streams that have several lovely trout ponds in their North of Groveton, the Con necticut becomes a trout stream that lures anglers from far distant points when its lusty rainbow trout are rising to dry and wet flies. In mid-summer the pools also offer the only good bass fishing in this corner of the Granite State. Vacationists, exploring this country for the first time, are often surprised to note the scar- 1 1 of level ground.

There is a popular misconception, it seems, that the North Country is a flat land of thick fir swamps, when actually, it is an almost unbroken array of moun tains and valleys that are penetrated only by tote road and hiking trail. We feel the bis regional maps put out by some of the oil companies are your best friends. One company's, in particular, is very superior for legibility, and we'll be happy to tell you which if you write us. These show all the main routes clearly without the distractions of secondary routes. But we always keep a detailed state map handy for reference in case of detours or when driving in metropolitan areas, where detailed directions are important Routes ar better posted than ever before throughout the country, even in cities. If you bear in mind that all routes cros3 each other at one point or another in cities, it is almost impossible to get lost.

In addition, signs directing motorists to all the new toll highways are post ed throughout each state. By-passes and alternates of major routes to help you avoid city traffic are becoming more common all the time in metropolitan areas, frequently making it unnecessary to pass through cities at all. By sticking to obvious routes and avoiding the short cuts suggestions of well-meaning local citizens, you'll simplify your trip and avoiding the short cut sug- ting lost, losing time, and driving on bad roads. Each day, through summer and winter, new vacationers and their cameras discover Tampa's pic turesque Latin Quarter, tropical waterfront, historical spots and scenic views. Ybor City, Tampa's Latin Quarter, is packed with picture making opportunities. Among the most popular subject matter in the city within a city are the authentic Spanish buildings and restaurants, numerous cigar factories, Latin clubs and theaters and Ybor Cuians themselves.

Along Tampa's sprawling waterfront, the camera's eye can record the unloading of tropical fruits and bananas, huge sea- turtles, phosphate and many other products. Incidentally, the bananas arrive in Tampa while they're still green a fact of interest to the color film enthusiast. Historical spots such as the DeSoto Oak, where the Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto bar gained with the Indians in 1539, are also popular. And the Univer sity of Tampa, copied in the Gay 90 from the ALhambra of Spain, proudly raises its 13 minarets against the lorroa sky lor an un usual architectural shot. Most everyone makes at least one "day trip" across the line Into Quebec, crossing th border either at Beecher's Falls at Norton, Vermont, or on Route 3 to Cartierville, Quebec. BOB SLOANE it hotel, motel, or tourist home, with good cross ventilation.

The big drawback of a tourist home is the sharing of the bath, but often as not there are only one or two other rooms In the house and these may not even be occupied. Often there are two baths, so you've got a good chance of getting a private bath out' of the deal anyway. Children Adjust If you're traveling with children, one of the essentials is a supply of food in the car. Not just cookies and fruit but staples such as bread, luncheon meat, tomatoes, milk and the like. Children get hungry unpredictably while traveling, and it's just as well to feed them adequately in stead or plying them Math snacks.

If you're worried about the children not getting enough sleep while travehng, or otherwise not fulfilling their normal home rou tines, you'll probably discover that your kids, like ours, have a remarkable capacity for adjust- ing themselves, when tired enough they'll conk out on the back seat and sleep as long as they would at home. Insecurity feelings seem to be no problem at all, sine they sleep in the same room with you. For those of you who ar dieting, you'll be interested to know that driving a car seems to use some calories more, anyway, than most of us use on our reg ular jobs. Stick to a light lunch, modest restaurant portions at dinner, and avoid those midnight snacks that are probably the real culprits at home, and you'll probably find yourself losing a little weight without half trying. If you're a Jack Sprat team, al we are, you'll be happy to know this can work both ways.

While Bob lost weight, Shirley, away from demanding household chores, ate more, and more often, tnan she had time for at home, and gained a comely five pounds in a month. Today it appears almost every town has at least one.

But, except in the south and southwest, where both hot weather and air conditioning have been taken for granted for a long time, the rates are in clined to be staggering for the average family's budget. The tendency in motels is to charge by the room instead of the number of guests. Thus many motels charge J10 or $12 a night for as few as one or as many as lour persons. This is fine for a group of salesmen traveling together, but can make a shambles out of one man vacation pay. I Meanwhile, as everyone goes tooth and nail after the tourist's dollar, only the old fashioned' tourist home goes on unchanged.

I The kindly old folks who rent out their upstairs rooms still charge only $3.50 to 5.00 cou ple and $5.00 to $6.00 for a fami ly. No air conditioning, of course, but while we're on the subject, we ve seen few nights out in the country when it didn't cool off enough to sleep comfortably.
