THE SUN. Monday, October 24, WT B4" Good oP Charlie Brown tastes his first kiss in tonight's superior special mLI. -1 1 ml. -i 1 aL. -1 iL Anil the end.

fmm unHpr him at He is after a tnr-trailer. But in a close came, the old she has a whole court of princesses. The warmest thing about TV next to an over has been on umpteen times before. But CBS has apparently decided to rest that By BILL CARTER What exactly is it that makes the "Peanuts" cartoon characters so popular? Described in the abstract, a comic based totally on the adventures of children under 10, peopled with characters who are alternately pathetic, cruel, heartless and philosophical, does not seem like the kind of thing that wold enrapture children and adults alike. But "Peanuts" does.

And the "Peanuts" animated television specials do. Tonight's will probably do the same thing again. This one is called "It's Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown," and like the others in this exceptional animated series, this one is a completely charming cartoon that exudes "Peanuts" boys, Charlie, Linus, Schroder. Pig Pen, get to be the girls's escorts at the dance that night after the big football game. Naturally Charlie is selected to accompany Miss Red.

That makes our little friend understandably nervous during the game that afternoon. Somehow Charlie has gotten' himself assigned the team kicker. And guess who is is holder? Who else but Lucy, who has tormented Charlie every football season since the strip began with her penchant for pulling the ball away just as he kicks at it The game is tense and close. The "Peanuts" kids are playing a bunch of bruisers, but have a secret weapon in Peppermint Patty, who runs over people like a trac- heated tube. "It's Your First Kiss" is oh Channel 2 beginning at 8.

It will be followed immediately by another animated special for Halloween, "Fat Albert's Halloween Special." Boths shows are a long cut above the usual range of children's programming. The networks like to stuff the holidays with animated shows for children. Most of them are low-grade in quality, and worse than that, most of them are repeats. (The networks aparently go on the theory that there is a heavy turnover in children's viewership sound enough, but what about the poor parents who must watch the same thing for each family addition?) This is usually the time of year for the Great Pumpkin "Peanuts" special that one and go with this years new edition. "It's Your First Kiss" contains most of the elements of "Peanuts" charm, though it prorbably has an even heavier dose of misery for Charlie Brown than usual though things work out for him, after a fashion, in the end.

This time Charlie Brown finally gets to meet, and we get to see, that little red-haired girl, the object of his dreams for lo these many panels. And she certainly merits old Chuck's ardor. She's a cutie, inordinary elaborate for the usually spare pen of Charles Schultz. It seems that the little red-haired girl has been elected homecoming queen (do grade schools have homecomings?) and symbolic victim and he must remain so. None of this really explains why the "Peanuts" characters have been so successful.

It probably comes down to Mr. Schultz's brilliance. But the simplest explanation is mat the cartoons are good, extraordinarily good. 1 Tonight's retains all the traditions. Because of the original uncertainty about when or if Channel 2 would run the Tenauts" special the station had to rearrange its normal Monday night lineup, AT first Channe' 2 planned on keeping its Corralin' The Colts show at the normal 8 P.M.

spot, but then thought better of blocking Charlie Brown. Now Corrallin' has been moved back into the 7.30 spot. The people who had tickets for tonight's live Colt show were called and told to show up a half-hour ear-lier, but the station was concerned that all the listings might not reflect the change. So for the record, Corrallin' the Colts begins at 7.30 tonight Followed By "It's Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown" and then "The Fat Albert Halloween Special." kicking is essential And Charlie experiences bis usual difficulties with Lucy. It only makes it worse that the little red-haired girl is watching.

Charlie is mortified at his failure to do something heroic. Few adults can probably watch Charlie's tribulations and humiliations without experiencing pain, but apparently many children take it in stride. He is the victim. That is his role. They seem to accept that Tonight's show is heavy on the football action.

Mr. Schultz has always had a thing for sports. And surprisingly enough, the game situations are pretty realistic for a cartoon. All the scoring and such make complete sense. As usual, the animation is extraordinary by TV standards.

Mr. Schultz's work is transfered. to amination with amazing accuracy. And it is always obvious that money is no object is a "Peanuts" special. After the game there is a sequence at the big dance that will hit about every man who has experienced terror at a first romantic fling.

It is handled with great care. The phrase, "made a little lower than the angels," tells us about the eternal Son of God who also became a man. The author goes on to say that Christ has now completed His work of redemption by dying on the cross and has again been restored to His place of glory. What a wonderful thought! We could not save ourselves, no matter how much we tried. But God still loves us, and He sent His beloved Son to die for our sins. By faith in Him we can be saved.

"Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need" (Hebrews 4: 16). By BILLY Dear Mr. Graham 1 heard that the Bible says Jesus was "a little lower than the angels." What does this mean? Answer You are thinking of the statement in Hebrews 2:9: "But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone" (New International Version). To get the full meaning of this passage, we have to look at the first chapter of Hebrews. In it, the author outlines the superiority of Jesus to the angels, since He alone was God's Son, "by whom also he made the worlds being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power" (Hebrews A series of seven quotations from the Old Testament is included to testify to the superiority of the messiah to the angels.

In the second chapter of Hebrews, however, the author tells us how the Son of God became man in order to die for our Poetry reading Clayton Eshleman and Joe Candarelli will present a poetry reading Wednesday evening at 8 P.M. in the Maryland Institute College of Art's Mount Royal Station. Mr. Eshleman is a West coast poet and publisher of Caterpillor magazine. He also authored "The Gull Wall," recently published by Black Sparrow Press.
