THE EVENING SUN TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 1985 C5 3 new movies offer pain to the actors and to the audience The Cannon people (Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus) don't believe in waiting, and maybe they should. "Missing in Action" was released in November, and the film did so well that a little more than three months later we have a pequel. Chuck Norris, again the star, is the karate champ who is trying to get away from that kind of film. There was very little karate in "Missing In Action." There is even less in "Missing in Action 2" but it comes at a bad time in the film. Actually, there may be no good time in this movie, so maybe it is best that the chops fall where they do.

In "MIA," Col. James Braddock (Norris) returned to Vietnam to rescue a group of MIAs. The new film precedes the first. A "prequel," it shows how Braddock was captured, tortured and held for 10 years by the Fifty minutes along, Braddock escapes his captors and then sticks around to blow them all to China. He's a one-man army, a James Bond, really, but then who asks us to take these things that seriously? Soon-Teck Oh plays Colonel Yin, and when he and Braddock go at it at the conclusion of the film, you don't much care who gets it because Soon-Teck Oh is not that good an actor.

He tries to look mean, but in appearance, is closer to choir boy than devil. His angelic look takes from the film, particularly the climax. Not that it matters. The only thing that matters in this film is the violence. The producers are asking you to enjoy it.

They aren't putting it down. They are using it as a form of "entertainment." 'High! Patrol' and the ending, in which Paulsen, Riley and Langston parody "Fistful of Dollars" is very good, but the rest is for those people who think flatulence is still worth a laugh. 'Superstition' There isn't much mystery to "Superstition," another horror film. There is much pain, boredom and violence but mysterious, it is not. The only question one might ask is why is this family moving into this house? A South American jungle might be a better location.

Everyone knows the building has a history of death. Everyone knows about the families that have died there, but none of this seems to bother the new tenants, and before you can say "Friday, the 13th," they are being thinned by a demon that was "buried" in the pond outside the house, centuries before. Unfortunately, it did not stay buried. Unfortunately, it roams the house, killing anyone it sees, and at conclusion, we get that overused, very tired horror-film finish. 2 James Houghton, Albert Salmi, Lynn Carlin and Larry Pennell are in the cast.

Heaven knows why they agreed to do this film, Salmi and Carlin in particular. There was a time when both actors were doing better things. Surely, their careers would be better served if they were to do nothing at all, rather than this. As in all horror films, the kids are stupid. In this one, however, the adults are stupid, too, particularly the young priest (Houghton) who has a marvelous way of dismissing the most bizarre incidents.

A young boy dies here, too. He is the youngest member of the family, perhaps 13, and this may be a first for the horror cycle. Most horror films leave the small kids alone. You have to be into your teens and intolerably stupid to make it as a corpse in these things. Now, it is the very young.

Next, infants will be murdered on screen. "Missing in Action 2," "Night Patrol" and "Superstition" are showing at local theaters. the carrot scene from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High?" You remember the Communion-rail scene from "Heaven Help Us?" Well, "Night Patrol" gives us another gross-out, one that matches those, a sight-and-sound gag that takes place in front of a sperm bank. The film appalls in other areas, too. A young boy, no more than 11, is shot to death in the movie.

No matter, it's all in good fun. That, at least, is what the producers want us to think. Linda Blair, Pat Paulsen, Jaye P. Morgan, Jack Riley, Billy Barty and Murray Langston are in the cast of "Night Patrol," whose opening titles are in French. Somebody thinks this is funny.

They also thought it was funny to do the first few scenes in French, with sub titles. Mon Dieu! The "Night Patrol" plot is a very thin one. Not that this kind of comedy needs one, but "Night Patrol" isn't all that funny, so it can use all the plot it can get. Langston is the cop who also works as a standup comic with a paper bag over his head. Known as "The Unknown Comic," he is being impersonated by a bandit who is robbing banks and letting the blame fall on the comic.

Some of the material used by the "Unknown Comic" is obscene-funny, Jeciii Dixon horoscope "Night Patrol" is a blatant ripoff of "Police Academy," a sin we might forgive if the new film were half as funny as the movie it apes. It There are, it is true, some honest laughs, but they come very late in the film, and in order to enjoy them, you must sit through the rest, and this may be asking too much. Some of "humor" in "Night Patrol" is simply gross.
