Flake. The station, WHCT, currently offers, live and in color, professional soccer games on Sunday afternoon in cooperation with CBS. At the same time, Flake also announced the addition of two new program series to the station lineup: "The Ray Anthony JACOBSON the art of "parody," Britten was able to subtly interject and create his own style. This is a fine recording. It is a must for the collector, with many exquisite sounds as in the "Romance" section of the "Variations," which was particularly exhilarating with its series of lively melodic strains over a strict pizzicato bass accompaniment.

Peter Pears seems to have a voice created especially for Britten's music, so well do the two blend together. Barry Tuckwell, French horn; London Symphony with Istvan Kertesz, conductor; London Stereo CS 6519. $5.79. This might well be called a "family album" of sorts, since these are horn compositions by a father IFranz) and his more famous son.

The warm tonal quality and the virtuosity that Tuckwell brings to these works are excellent. However, I happen to be partial to the earlier recordings by the late Dennis Brain, who gives them more feeling and inspiration. These horn concertos are not the best of Richard Strauss' works, but they are exciting, and concertos written for French horn are not exactly in abundance. Anyone who is fond of this mellow-toned brass instrument, should enjoy the recording. Britten, Les Illuminations; Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge; Peter Pears, tenor; English Chamber Orchestra with Benjamin Britten, conductor; London Stereo OS 26032 $5.79.

Britten's music is like a vision of reality as seen through a dream, there is a mysterious evasiveness about these works, particularly "Les .1 1 1 i a-tions," combined with a contrasting luminous and poignant statement of feeling about the musical settings he creates. To emphasize his musical theme, in this work a series of impressions, Britten chose the text for "Les Illuminations" only after his musical cycle was almost completely planned. Thus, the words are used mainly to enhance the "feeling" of the music. In "Variations," the many melodic string themes are especially intriguing, since they are essentally parodies on European styles of composition, i.e., Viennese, Mahlerian, etc. Through UNHAPPY because you hear but don'r understand what people say?
