Big job ahead of Dr. Mary McCoy, new specialist for girl athletics in Baltimore's public is to rekindle desire for sensible competitive sports program, which has died through adverse influence of older physical education teachers and indifference of faculties.

Now that Brooklyn has gained first place in tight National League race, the grandstand managers have given job back to Wally Alston. After'Brooks lost second game of Milwaukee series everyone in Brooklyn seemed to have a different way the game could have been won, had he or she been manager instead of Alston. Wally got more help than Paul Richards does here on losing days, which is quite a feat. I doubt if even Cleveland Indians have gotten better pitching on a road trip than Orioles have on this one until yesterday's second game at Kansas City. May Regret Decision Richards may live to regret his decision in giving up on Smith, who seems to be perking up with Kansas City. With every physical and mental ability at their disposal, these men strive to realize those goals.

Whether they succeed entirely is not nearly so important as the fact that at the end of the season they can look back and say, "I did my level best." 0 0 0 We can't ask for more than that from the thousands of clean-cut American young men who are competing in college football. We shouldn't ask for more, because the end result of that process is what makes the game great and its products worthwhile. Striving for goals, whether they be attainable or not, is what is important. This striving in football means self-discipline, training of the mind and body, development of individual character, and realization that teara spirit and team play are paramount, even to the point of subjugating one's personal desires. College football produces these things and there is no finer method in America today to produce good students, good fighting men, and worthy citizens to assume their roles in professions and businesses of our nation.

(TOMORROW Hopalonv Casadv. All-America from Ohio State, tells of highpres-sure college football from the insidcJ Champaign. 111., Sept. 17 (JP) College football represents the ultimate in a purely masculine' sport which requires topmost qualities of rugged individualism, combined with a true spirit of co-operation and team play. Because of these factors, college football has been and will continue to be popular with both those who compete and those who enjoy their football vicariously as spectators.

There is, of course, a price to pay for popularity. Anyone or anything which draws public attention also draws criticism. From some sources, our game has been roundly belabored in recent months. 0 0 0 Yet, for every bit of destructive criticism which has been leveled, any college coach can point with ease to 1,000 cases in which football has helped to produce better men as students in our colleges and universities, better men to defend our nation's freedom, better men to form a strong bulwark of solid citizenship in our nation. Amateurism is an ideal.

College coaches stand out as individuals and as a group through the American Football Coaches' Association in efforts to preserve amateurism and the amateur spirit in football.
