A quick shift in plan brings Nicolai Malko forward as conductor of the second week's concerts of the Ravinia festival, beginning Tuesday evening, In place of Artur Rodzinski. Mr. Malko was originally scheduled to conduct during the week of July 16, But last week Dr. Rodzinski caught a severe cold, and his physician has ordered a week of complete rest at the end of his current engagement at the Lewisohn stadium in New York. According to present report.

Dr. Rodzinski Is staying in bed all the time except when he is rehearsing or conducting at the stadium. The illness has had no serious complications, however, and a week of convalescence should put him in good shape to undertake his postponed fortnight at Ravinia beginning on Tuesday evening, July 9. Richard Crooks, this week's was born in Trenton. N. in en undisclosed year toward the end cf the nineteenth century. His musics! training began early and he was ctjve as a boy soprano during the early 1900s. The world war, in which he sew service, interrupted his career, and it was not until 1922 that he made his official debut as a tenor illi the New York Symphony orchestra.

Five years later, in Ilam-l urg, Germany, Mr. Crooks appeared fr the first time in opera, singing the r61e cf Cavaradossi in "Tosca." American operatic debut was rr.a: In Philadelphia In 1930. The rC was the same. He first trod the hoards of the Metropolitan on Feb. 25.

This copy, one of the six perfect copies in the United States, is printed cn paper and is bound in two volumes in early ISth century calf, with, gilt and tooled backs. The Gutenberg Bible is sometimes called the 42 line or Mazaria Bible, the first known copy having been discovered in the library of the French cardinal.

It contains 1.2S2 pages, printed in Latin, and the type fac-is designed to imitate as closely as possible the work of a scribe. Copies on vellum are in the Library cf Congress and the Huntington library at San Marino, Cal, but experts regard the paper edition as the earlier ia -publication. It was begun in 1132 and completed five years later. Mordecai M. Waxman, 3418 West Monroe street, has been awarded the Mrs.

Benjamin Davis scholarship, which is made annually possible thru the efforts of the Chicago branch cf the Women's league. The award was announced by Dr. Leo L. Honor, director of the board of Jewish education of Chicago. The scholarship entitles the recipient to one year's tuition at the Jewish theological seminary of America in New York City.

The Rev. Joseph T. Kush, professor In Gregorian chant and choir director at St. Mary-of-the-Lake seminary, is giving a special course on choral conducting during the summer session at Mundelcin college which opened last week. About 200 students are reported to have enrolled in the 15 courses offered.

He has already seen Ravinia Park, however, for he stopped off last summer on his way to teach master classes at Mills college in California. A Tschaikowsky festival, in recognition of the centenary of the composer's birth, will be a prominent feature of Mr. Malko's three evening programs.

Albert Spalding, famous American violinist, will play the violin concerto on Saturday evening. In the course of the week the three favorite symphonies the Fourth, the Sixth, and the Fifth, In that order will be presented, as well as the Theme and Variations from the third orchestral suite, in major, and Alexander Glazunoff's transcription for string orchestra of the slow movement of the Third String Quartet, a work seldom played in this country. The Glazunoff transcription is, so far as can be ascertained, the first performance in America. Mr. Malko also will bring to American attention for the first time a score by the contemporary Danish composer, Knud-age Riisager, entitled Qarrtsilunl."
