-3 taking all the parts himself. And the rest of the cast are agreed that he gives them something to shoot at in the way of a potent reading of the lines. At this session the script may be modified. In fact it is brushed up, revamped, polished until the moment it reaches the air. And then sometimes lines may be ad libbed giving an extra lift or laugh.

During the actual airing Author Quinn may be found in the sponsor's booth if vacant, or on the floor of the control booth, lending a keen ear. There he frets and stews over all the things that might happen but never do. His greatest fear is that one of the key performers will fail to show some evening. But as usual they are all present and in top form. Under such circumstances Fibber McGee has no more appreciative listener than Don Quinn.

WMAQ Catholic hour. A WOMAN!" Don Quinn Gives Lowdown on Comedy Scripters. BY LARRY WOLTERS. Bach, Beethoven, Erahms and even Berlin set credit when their compositions are broadcast. Shakespeare and Shaw are given their lull due when their works go out on the air.

But the people who really write for radio what a time they have ever getting a mention. The fans whoop and cheer for Jack Benny, Bing Crosby, Bob Burns, Fibber McGee and Dm QUfa. Molly. Vic and Sade, Lights Out, and 101 other features. But who recognizes the names of Bill Morrow and Ed Beloi, Car roll Carroll, Don Quinn, Paul Rhymer, Arch Oboler or the many others who keep punching the typewriters while the stars take the bows and wallow in fan mail? In Hollywood writers get credit lines in pictures, live in mansions with several swimming pools attached and report incomes on speaking terms with those of Gable and Garbo.

But in radio writers are the forgotten men. Pondering this matter the other day it seemed like a good idea to track down one of these lads and find out what they are like, how they do their work, what are their rewards and anything else that might be of interest or shed some light on this very dark subject. Tracking Down a Writer. We wondered about the Fibber McGee show. On the air for three years without a rest it has climbed steadily in public favor so that today it is one of the top evening network shows.

Vaguely we recalled that one Don Quinn was the author. A look int the phone book disclosed no telephone number. A call to NBC was of no aid. They didn't have It, either. Veil, ultimately he was located and arrangements made to meet him on his one day a week off Tuesday.

That's the day after the Fibber show. Each show, Quinn disclosed over our oysters, is pitched up in the im mediate week preceding presentation While wrestling with their steaks, they criticize the show just given and hash over ideas for the following week's offering. The theme of last Monday's show Fibber as a baby tender was actually suggested at a previous session. But it was at this clambake that Ihe "payoff" was suggested that of having Fibber accept a job as lion tamer to get away from the baby. Every one puts in his oar at these sessions," Don explained.

We kick various ideas around until they get into a shape meeting general approval." (Fibber and Molly, that is Jim and Marion Jordan, who happens to be convalescing from illness just now; Harlow Wilcox, Hugh Studebaker, who plays Silly Bill Thompson, who plays Nick De Populus, and other characters; Harold Peary, Betty Winkler, Clarke Dennis, Ted Weems, Billy Mills are iikeiy all to be in on these sessions. Also Cecil Underwood, production director, and Paul Hennir-g, a former Kansas City lad who is no a full time assistant to Quinn. 1 How Ho Does It. Around Wednesday noon Quinn locks up the house, shuts off the phone, gets out his typewriter, dictionary, encyclopedia, Roget's Thesaurus but no gag booksand he is ready for work. Unlike many another comedy writer Don has no library of comic writings, no file of puns and jokes, no card index of sure fire comic situations.

And he doesn't refer to old scripts. He doesn't even keep an old one in his house, preferring to rely entirely on whatever mental resources he can command. In addition to the rough olot which has been outlined on Monday, Quinn has also the musical cues, the commercial copy which is to be gagged into the script, and possibly some material that Henning has contributed. He starts writing the show from the beginning and takes every thing in order to the end. And he sticks with it one long session which runs, if he is lucky, ten hours but may stretch to sixteen or longer.

Only Interruptions he permits himself are for a bite or possibly a brief stroll with Sklppy, a terrier Betty Eckersall gave the Quinns. Quinn credits much of the success et the show to Jack Lewis, advertising executive, who thought up the Fibber McGee idea and supervises the show; to Jim and Marion Jordan and Cecil Underwood, the director. The inspiration for Fibber McGee came from Jim and Marion Jordan themselves through their former Smackout performances. Lewis listened to this drama via his auto radio when he drove to work each morning. He liked them and saw in them potentialities for a great evening show. He outlined his ideas to them.

It sounded good to the Jordans and to Quinn who had been writing Smack-out for them.
