Altho many school buildings still show considerable damage to the windows, the breakage has been cut to an extent that the board's crew of glaziers in a few months may elim inate the backlog of repair work that has existed for -years, said John Howatt, business manager for the board. William Bachrach, a board mem ber, initiated the campaign to reduce the window breakage early this year. This week he reported 27,409 school windows broken in the last eight months, compared with 43,609 for the period last year. The saving for the board so far this year is estimated at 5S0.000. Bachrach and other school officials believe this sav ing can be doubled thru a continuing campaign.

COMMISSION AID PROTESTS SALE IN MEDIC CENTER Sale to the Chicago Medical so ciety for 25,000 of a 2 acre plot of land in the West Side Medical center by the Medical Center commission was assailed yesterday by David Brill, commission secretary, in whose absence the sale was approved Aug. 19. Brill, an attorney, made his protest at a commission meeting in the University club, declaring the medical society is not qualified for such a gift. It is a self-serving organization." Brill said the land would cost the commission about $400,000, and that under terms of the sale it would have to clear the land of buildings, a process he esti mated would cost the commission "over $50,000." He said he had written the com mission, informing it he was unable to attend the Aug. 19 meeting and asking that the action on the sale be postponed until he had a chance to argue against it.

This request, he said, was ignored. Other members of the commission created in 1941 by the state legislature, said they considered that the medical society "fully qualified" for such a transaction. 8 ARRESTED IN 4 GAMING RAIDS BY COUNTY POLICE Sheriff's deputies yesterday arrested eight persons in four gaming raids. CHURCH BOMBING LOSS IN ENGLAND TOLD BY VISITOR Destruction of church property in England by bombs was described "wvm 'AV yesterday by Er- nest Jeffs, deputy commissioner and technical adviser to the reconstruction department of the Congregational Union of i -a England and Wales, at a press conference in the Union League club. Jeffs is the guest of Dr. Niel E. Hansen, direc 5 Erneft Jeffs tor of the Chicago Congregational union, which financed Jeffs' visit to the United States.

"Of the 4,000 churches of the Congregational denomination in England. 320 were destroyed" Jeffs said. The worst loss was in London, where 52 churches were obliterated. We estimate that during the next five years it will cost $5,728,000 to restore our church properties all over the country. But material is scarce, and.

tho churches have a priority rating in building, the backlog in construction is a handicap. For 240 Congregational churches nothing can be promised before March, 1949." Jeffs is visiting the United States for consultation with church archi tects to gain ideas on modern church building. JOHN EVANS Chicago Jewry yesterday thronged temple and synagog for Yom Kip- pur. Services began at sundown with the Kol Nidre, when all vows hastily taken and forgotten during the last year were annulled, and will continue thruout today.

The sermon themes of many spiritual leaders were divine reconciliation and a realistic attitude toward obligations of religion. Dr. Solomon Goldman, preaching at Anshe Zmet synagog, 3760 Pine Grov advised man to be extremely humble because he has not solved the problems that have perplexed him from earliest times, altho he lives In an atomic age. Barry Held Curse of Age We have not eliminated poverty, disease, crime, prejudice, economic Insecurity, or international suspicion," Dr. Goldman said.

To these evils we have added cynicism, an Inescapable sense of frustration, and worst of all, a sick hurry. The curse cf our age Is lack of leisure; we have time only to act, and not to be. The failure of mankind today is because It has betrayed both religion and science Instead of effecting harmony between them. I am convinced that so long as science and religion re main in conflict there is no future for the human race." A Rendezvous with God" was the theme of Rabbi Morris A. Gut stein of Congregation Shaare Tik-rah.

3314 Bryn JIawr who con ducted Yom Kippur services at Korth Park college. Cites RenJervoua witb God If we seek deeply into our souls we shall find that each of us possesses many elements of what is Eodness, and thru religious faith end practice we make these ele ments Godlike." he said. "Thus we have a rendezvous with God not only during the High Holy days but also In all days of the year." Dr. Louis Binstock at Temple Sholom, 34S0 N. Lake Shore likened the emptiness of peoples' lives to that of depopulated ghost towns.

Empty of all purpose, devoid of all love and affection, without satisfaction or joy, their lives are like areas cursed with absentee landlordism. People live off each other, not with each other; they are no longer masters of themselves, and to escape from themselves they resort to psychiatric treatments." Taking the words of Jeremiah, P.est for your soul." as a text, Rabbi Felix Levy at Temple Emanuel stressed that spiritual rest was mankind's dearest goal. BRITISH TROOPS INVADE SYNAGOG IN ARMS SEARCH fOilr- Trlbwn. Presa Service JERUSALEM. Sept.

23 Jews iraped in white prayer shawls today angrily completed a religious service in the middle of a street surrounded by British police and army units. They were interrupted in morning worship at a small Jerusalem S3nagog during a sudden search for terrorists and arms caches. Charges by Jewish community leaders that soldiers threw sacred religious books to the floor during the search of the synagog drew personal apologies from British military authorities. The Jews were Incensed because the search apd "depredations" took only a few hours before the beginning of Yom Kippur, or the Cay of atonement, holiest day of the Jewish religion, which started at sundown tonight. Invasion of the synagog occurred iuring searches of three north Jerusalem Jewish quarters inhabited mair.ly by oriental Jews, from whom Palestine underground groups draw most of their recruits.

During the hunt, 700 Jews were questioned and five men were held. Io arms caches were found.
