Tliko 1 11 5 DENIED BY LOVEJOY. Says the Carnegics To Not Contemplate PmsnuiiG, Dec. following de has created a groat sensation here, atid despite the denial of Secretary joy, of the Carnegie com pan tbtit then Is any truth hi the report, the majoritj of those interviewed on the subject, es peciully union men, say they such is the case. One prominent labor nin.ii says ho has positive information from an inside source that such a course has been adopted by the company. Secretary Love-joy, however, emphatic ally denies tho statement, and says hib company t)oes not, and never has, coiitem plated any such luove.

Dec. was precipitated here wheu it was reported that on Jan. 1, tlia service of the men who were employed In thejmill during the strike will be dispensed with. Wht-thei there is any foundation or not for the report not be ascertained. It is ac widely circulated and so much credence is given to it, that it appears to be founded on some good authority.

The statL'mont originated from the mill men themselves. They stated that notice had been posted in the plant, reading: "Tho services of the workmen who were employed in the Carnegie Company's works during the Hint- of the strike will not be required after Jan. I89.f. At tho mill tlie oflJuuls will nut citliei confirm or deny the report, and no amount questioning or pressing induces any oi the officials who were seen to commit themselves in the slightest degiee. A number of tho non-union men who were seen, however, as'tlu-y wure coming from the- restaurant, said that suuh notices were posted and that the men were making preparations to leave.

One of tho men said that quite a number of the employes, while preparing to quit, believed that they would be re-employed, as they looked upon tho matter as an attempt on tho part of the company to conciliate the old mim and restore them to their former positions; they thought that tho non-union men would be given a fair trial in tho general scramble for places which, it is reported, will occur at the first of tho year. At the office oC tho Carnegies it is aid that while tho company will employ none but competent men, wholesale discharges are not expected. No official denial ol the report, however, can, be obtained. A new scale will probably go into effect on Jan. 1, and such a notice waq posted, it is believed that it was done for tho purpose giving the old men an opportunity to apply for work under the new agreement.

LOSS. T'uy AVhui MYSTERY SURROUNDS THE CRIME Two Highly Respected Citizens of Tnllu- lnh, Murdfrfil. NEW ORLEANS, Dec. special from Tallulah, says: One of. the most dastardly crimes in the hibtor-y of the parish was perpetrated last afc Altoona station, twelve miles from this place.

The bodies wero not discovered for some hours when the alarm was given. A large body of citizens gathered at the sceno and dilUgent search was made to discover the murderers. Two negro suspects were brought to this place by the sheriff and lodged iu jail to await further investigation. Both the murdered men were highly respected citizens and their foul murder is sliroiuled in the deepest mystery. MAJESTIC'S STORMY VOYAGE.

Shipped Heavy Sea on Dec. 18 mid "Was Considerably Damaged. QCKENSTOWN, Dec. 22. The White Star line steamer Majestic, from New York Dec 1-1 for Liverpool, just arrived here, bears evidence of having had a very tempestuous voyage.

Her funnels were battered, mul her bides and upper works were coated with salt. The heiyht of tlie seas that boarded her may bi. judged from the fact that her crow's-nest, the place on be foremast occupied by tho lookout, had been demolished. The MnjesLlc took a heavy gale on Dec. 18.

A tremendous sea soon got np and tons upon UrnK of warer boarded the slimmer, causing much discomfort. Thu sea was ou the port bow, and this caused tlii; Majestic to pitch and roll heavily. Several of her passengers who attempted to walk about in the saloon were thrown from their feet and sustained trival injuries. MAY COVER ST. ITlEli In Authorlt' Ok)en Tluio. IQ tlie old rneeting-houso of New England the most conspicuous object, next to the pulpit, was the deacons' pew. Ifc was near the pulpit, a foot or two above the level of the meetinghouse floor, and contained several high- backed chairs and a table, or broadj swing-ing shelf, for use at tli6 communion service.

In it sat venerable men, who had charge of the church poor and of the "prudential concerns" of the parish. Kext to the parson, they wero the most respected persons of tho parish. In Bristol, a singular local custom obliged the deacons, while in the meeting-house, to wear starched white linen caps. Among- the minor duties of the deacons of the olden time were visiting 1 and a i i the sick, the calling at bouses of church-members to hear the children say the catechism, and the reporting to the a of petty offenses. They also bud charge of the vessels ust'd in the co ram union service; they provided sacramental i and bread, nnd that no one but an accepted communicant partook of the sncred emblems.

The author of "The Sabbath in Puritan Xew lintflaiuV mentions a custom, which prevailed in several Eti- prland ehnrtmes, a made il tho duty nf deai'ons to walk tip and down the aisltis of the church at the close of that'll service, und deliver to person, who, in their was fitted to commune, a-jnet'il eheelc, en- i him ut the next celebration of the supper to join iu the sacred ordinance.
