FOURTEEN Tree-Eating Bears Face Indigestion EUREKA, Calif. (INS) The tree-eating black bears of Humboldt County, which often have a sheep for a side dish, today face a change of diet that Redwjod Empire lumber and stock men hope will result in lethal indiges- KVKNINU. The bears, according to investigators for Northern California's lumber industry, have come to regard redwoods and other species of trees as sylvan lollipops.

A single bear, lumbermen report, can destroy as many as 20 trees in a 24-hour period-by ripping off bark in search of sweet and juicy sapwood. Stockmen claim the bears often polish off a sheep before lopping their meal off with a sapwood dessert. As a result of depredations by the bears, Governor Goodwin J. Knight recently signed into a law a bill permitting owners of live stock or timber, or their agents, to kill, by any methods or means, bears threatening lumber or livestock. To reduce the bear population, it hSs been suggested that trapping be increased and that cyanide guns be used.

Generally, Connie acts anguished on TV. She doesn't know why. "Maybe," she says candidly, "it's because that's what I do best. I'm gelling better at comedy, loo. I like comedy.

But usually I'm tearing my hair. Perhaps that's the real me. I don't know." It's gotten so these parts full of heavy emotion and hair-tearing have gotten to be known throughout TV as "Connie Ford parts." It's a nice tribute. When she tears hair and otherwise emotes, it's work. Connie says she's "been known to lose eight pounds" during a performance.

And that's not all hair, either. Since most TV producers know her'and know what she can do, there's no great problem looking work. She just sits and waits for them to call her, or her agent. There may be some lean periods, when Connie Ford parts aren't aiound, but generally she goes right from one play to another. "I'm thoroughly spoiled by all ol it." she says.

The U.S. Navy has rejected requests that it take part in salvage programs. But McMullen has the support of a number of leading naval officers, and several con gressmen.

One trouble is that nobody is sure of the exact location of the armored Monitor, McMullen rejects recent report of Robert F. She was the first person ever to be televised in Britain at a political party convention. It happened at Blackpool last October when for the first time Conservatives allowed British Broadcasting Corporation TV cameras to cover their conference. Miss Vickers was the conference's first speaker. Glamorous Joan participated in another memorable television program in July, 1954. It was a party political telecast in which viewers throughout Britain were invited to telephone the studio, and put questions to a panel of Hundreds of people from all over Britain called London, completely tying up all trunk telephone circuits.

PHONE PA 4-9822 Voice Of America' Jazz Experiment Big Success By IRWIN SAFCHIK WASHINGTON (INS) Man, dig that crazy Voice of America! Last Jan. 6, it began broadcasting two hours of jazz daily to hep- cats from Norway to New Zealand. Today, voice program director Gene King pronounced the raperi-- ment a "fantastic" success. 'The. in temperature from cool to hot is played on a two-hour program called "Music U.

S. the show, which even comes equipped with a couple of professional disk jockeys, is recorded in Washington and transmitted from Tangier, North Africa. Actually, it is beamed jft Scandinavia. But "Music U. also rides airwaves which boogie-woo- gie through western Europe, jitterbug over the vNorth Pole and won't quit until rocking and rolling in the.South Pacific.

Whether the show's hottest licks are managing to melt through the Iron Curtain is not At any rate, the Communists haven't tried; to jarivthe daily jam sessions. Not yet, anyway. There's no question, though, that "Music U. S. -A." is considered real gone wherever it is heard in the free world.

Since 'the gave the downbeat 10 months ago, if has received 10,000 letters about the program. Early last month, listeners 1 offered free photographs of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington which the musicians themselves supplied. So far, there have been more than requests for the pictures. As a result of this "tremendous, frenetic" response, King said, the voice intends to spread the gospel of American Jazz to southeast Asia in the near future. "Music- U.

S. comes in two equal parts. The first hour is devoted to the popular dance tunes of the day. The.second hour consists of pure jazz, from New Orleans and Chicago to Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw to Dave Brubeck and Dizzie Gillespie. Occasionally, the show's disk jockeys, Willis Conover and Ray Michaels, also interview such famous practitioners of jazz as Woody Herman, Art Tatum, Sarah Vaughn, Eartha Kitt, Ellington and Armstrong.

There are no commercials. That is, nobody ever mutters a word of propaganda. The cold war gets the cold shoulder. "Music S. plays and discusses music, nothing else.

Which isn't to say the program has had a completely harmonious effect on its audience. King explains: "Half the letters we from fanatics roaring because we play loo much progressive jazz and not enough Goodman. The other half complains Goodman corny. They demand more Gillcs- pie." "Music was thought up by King and his top assistant, John Wiggin, who decided it was lime to "deviate" from the normal voice programming. Now, they also produce programs of folk music and symphonies.

But jazz is obviously -No. 1 on the Voice of America's hit parade and King is genuinely amazed, He says: "We get mail from people who show a real knowledge, a real appreciation of jazz. They follow the stuff. They live. it.

They even use American slang to express themselves. "Imagine a Tahitian writing in to say he's 'hep' to Texas Bank Owns Stagecoach Morlgage LA MARQUE.
