16 THE HARTFORD CO II A NT MONDAY, 2.1. 1JR0. Informing You Hollywood 1. BY jr. OAKLEY STAFFORD By HEDDA HOPPER Notes Aboot Marjo, The) Miracle Woman Of The Theater.

Margo Jones of Dallas, Texas, founder and director of the Dallas Theater which has been to long discussed and heralded as tops In what experimental and local theater can do. She is a trim, thirty-lsh brunette woman with sparkle and style. She is electric, vibrant, ageless, and brimmine with humor, Went to Texas College, Hollywood. John Wexley, back from eight months in L'urope, has Joined up with Charlie Keldman, and they'll put Wexley's play "They Shall Not Die" on the screen It was the forerunner of all the plays about the Negro situation, and was a smash on Broadway, but considered ahead of Its 1lme for films. They want Shelley Winters for the good girl played on Broadway by Rufh Gordon) and Claude dona to players.

KO forth ine. odd death. Develdped Kncouraced them to Fought for a build-Held out against every Saw her project take fight for life flower and became the talk of the root theater-minded ail over the world This took 20 years. And this Texas woman bears little If any visible effects of the heartbreak which might mar her prettifies or make her disposition acid or Intolerant. A miracle woman.

Ihat'a Margo Jones. She makes local groups, who persist In doing over and over again what other groups are doing over and over again1 In the way of plays, seem like has-beens. Those are strong words but I mean It. Shoot if you must. I still mean It.

For Instanee, In Tha Case Of "An Old Ileat-Up Woman," there was the author, Sari Scott, a girl from Pittsburgh who loved thea- but sold Insurance for the Panhandle's truckmen That girl taught English in schools In chahra to show thir When I rpcfntly aaw for Henry" bHns: produced for th tenth tlma I wanted to scream and ask why, why, why? Margo Tannics First For Tha Idea in the play, the seed Then the players then the set then the direction then the other thousand things. Everyone In her Dallas Theater is developed thrre. Her salient difference Is she has the courage to try the unknown Th ease of star names, tried plays, tried Ideas, tried tltlr-s do not win her from her original objective of new hlood, new Ideas, today's people, today's Ideas, today's lighting in the plays sh produces There is about her productions, there fore, the unexpected the new the novel the strictly l'J50. She is today Not yesterday except when she lapses into the classics for a relief from 1950, which everyone Is bound to want now and then. As Hhm Talked I Thought Most or the Masquers A while bark they asked me to lecture.

I have too little time, I would be selecting one group and neglecting the ethers So herein I am saying that In their hopes they are compatible with Margo's ideas. To date they have lagged behind her In selection of plays and new play-era for lead roles Have they tried originals? I am not sure. Her Dallas Theater la Not Huh- sidized It earns Jts keep The profit is low. The players are full-time. The salaries are moderate Acting and stage production she says, are a full-time job if it Is to be a Job lor lire and the wherewithal rrom which you earn your bread from, She started In debt She Hear now but her profit is small Her emotional happiness makes up for the money.

She Is succeeding' at doing what she wants She eats and sleeps comfortably If a roll of money comes from a play which reaches wider production, as this one has. then that's velvet and treat fun she vows she will stay with the Dalles Theater. I think she will, unless after 20 years she thinks she may for a spell want to earn some big money, for a few luxuries, nut If she does, you may he ure she will first be positive mat tne Dallas Theater Is left In very capable hands which will carry on the Ideals upon which It was munaed. uravo Margo Jones, miracle woman of the thea ter. Moral: don't plan foul deeds. Maybe when they are done Heaven will punish you as much as the perpetrator of them, ne sure to go in at the tcglnning of It. It weaves along so you will ba on the end of your sest. M.O.S. AMiumii.

The whole United States Cavalry gets In this one, And every Indian of the western plains, That means plenty of battle between them. But John Hodiak. who takes over when Ames falls out, is a no-good gent who wants to cause plenty of trouble. Bob is In love with the heroine. striking Retls Murvlve, Communist prisoners, about 130 of whom went on a hunger strike at Ambala, India, were reported "In good health" and being forcibly fed milk, cream and eggs. New Films TRAVELING E. M. Loew's. Joan Davis decided to go back to what used to make audiences roll in the aisles, for her film "Traveling Saleswoman." It is purely slap-stick with fantastic situations.

And believe It or not, I think slap-stick, which la ele. mentsry. will always be with us. Always make people laugh, They laughed at Joan yesterday at K. M.

Ioew's. Sure It's jrany. She's the daughter of a soap manufacturer who Is going bankrupt from no sales. So Joanie starts to get him some. She gets Into goofy situations, beginning with the one wherein she goes into the bank for a loan and the banker thinks It's a hold-up.

She makes a deal with the man of money to lend cash in return for a promise to sell soap through the west. So who's 1n the west. Indians, teacher. "And they are itchy Indians who need a bath. And what's good for a bath and an Itch, Soap, So a aale Is made.

Nuts, sure, but so are ihe comics yet people love them. Joanie Is In love with her own kind, Andy Devine, who has a moment of glory flirting with Adele Gergens, who la only looking for missing papers. Joanie understands eventually, that no man who looked at her would go for Adele really. It's plenty mixed up. Isn't slapstick always mixed up.

But while the human race is mixed up, we will have slap-stick. This one with a star like dumb Joanie, is one of slap-stick's best to date. Don't expect a thought In a single reel of film, Just absurdity, "Chinatown at Midnight" Is what the till suggests, a mystery co-thriller, M.O.S, INTRUDER IN THE DUST At Talaea Theater. Two first run exciting films are at Toll I'slaca Theater now, "ltt Intruder" a serious film, dealing with tha rare question discrimination and lynching In the south. It Is shocking in a scene or two relating to a corpse Too serious and deep for me, for weekend pleasure, ror you It could he different, A Negro landlord Is the pivot around which the film revolves.

He Is framed for murder solely on the basis of his color A white child (Claude Jarman Jr.) asks his uncle to defend the Negro. 'Hie lawyer doesn want to do It afraid of the taunts of the whites, who will torment white man who defends a Negro A conise Is the Important factor around which the case revolves Uee, I think tha film tries to settle a problem, or awaken the whites of the south to a problem, by steering people away rather than coaxing them in. and to view and review the case. Several films late ly seen here which played at this theater for In stance) made much better argu ments and thought-provokera thsn "Intruders." There's no hitler Dili In the world, regardless of how good it is to take for what ails you, that can be bettered by su gar-coating. I wish Hollywood had approached this problem a little more palatably, for mass-consump lion.

(to In for "Tension" at the begin ning. It Is a rlp-snortlng mystery. A husband wants, and plans, to murder his wife's lover. Someone else beats him to the punch. So the man with the motive and iht intention Is stuck with a crime NOWI Ends Thurs.

This hand presents a choice lelween a one no trump response and a raise to two spades.

While usually with an evenly balanced hand, the one no trump desponse should be given preference, It is our practice on hands that approach the maximum value for a single raise, to offer the raise In stead. Tltls band Is worth nine points in supMrt, which makes It close to a maximum raise, and that Is our preference though we would not quarrel violently with a response of one no trump. Partner has shown a good hand containing five hearts and four spades. It Is evident that he does not favor no trump and it Is proper for you at this point to show a preference for hearts of which the partnership holds at least eight cards, It would he unsound strategy to persist to two no trump merely because you have a diamond atopper. Furthermore, the singleton heart militates to some extent against such action, Our choice is for a rebid of two clubs.
