THE HARTFORD COURANT: THURSDAY, MAY 10, 1951. Hollywood BY HEDDA HOPPER'S STAFF Preinduction Tests Eliminated for June For the first time since the re-activitation of the draft in August there will be no preinduction examinations during June. Acting State Selective Service Director Herbert J. Hennessy announced Wednesday that the pool of manpower left over from March and 'April preinduction exams would be sufficient to meet the June call for 179 draftees from Connecticut. Exams during these two months were given to set men the lot and avoiding the jxrint Two women who were viewing the film in the Strand, and couldn't stay for the end, asked me to be sure to tell what "The Thing" was.

And spoil the story for those who pay their money? Nope. It is a virile story with action and suspense. Conflict and argument. The suspense angle is, of course, what keeps it going. Tim Holt stars in the film, "Gun Play," a western with action and thrills and spills.

No mystery here. Just fast writing and quick shooting. M.O.S. New Films THE THING' At Strand Theater You'll have to see "The Thing" at the Strand Theater to find out what it is. You don't want me to spoil the kick of the story for you.

The film is built around a party of American scientists and Air Force officers in an Arctic labora tory around the North Pole. The 'action comes from the conflict I between the scientists and the explorers over what do with a sin ister guest discovered in the wreckage of a space-ship. It is essentially a story of men. There is a pretty girl secretary in the story. Ken Tobey as captain, and Margaret Sheridan, are the principals in the film.

Although he got his inspiration for the film from the Gustave Dore drawings illustrating the story, it'll be made with live actors. Larry Watkins, who wrote the scripts for both "Treasure Island" and "The Story of Robin Hood," will do the movie adaptation for "Don Quixote." Elizabeth Taylor may be the replacement for Deborah Kerr in "Ivanhoe." That would take her to London to costar with Robert Taylor.

Deborah had to bow out of the picture because she's expecting a baby in September. Farley Granger didn't receive San Goldwyn's consent to come to New York until he reached the airport in Hollywood. Weight Matter J. Carrol Naish has been asked to go to India and play the role of Gandhi in a film. There's no doubt about his being able to handle the part from an acting standpoint; but for a man who likes to eat as Carrol does, it would be rough shedding enough pounds to resemble the great man whose specialty was going on long fasts.

Gene rowler, gathering material for a book on Red Skelton, is letting the co median tell his story and recording the conversation. They now have 22 hours of talk on tape, Red's been giving out with the most intimate details of his life. When Gene says, "That's interesting, but we can't print it," Red replies, "I know. But I'm telling you the facts so you will know exactly what kind of man you're writing about." Patricia Neal, working with 13-year-old Billy Gray in "The Day the Earth Stood Still," is at a disadvantage. She's been in pictures only three years.

He's been in seven. So Bily knows all the wrinkles of movie making. The other day, when they started a scene, he said to Pat, "Careful there. You're about to botch up my camera angle." A little girl doing a film at Twentieth was modeling with clay between scenes. An elderly actress, noticing her, said, "What are you making, child?" The reply: "A hundred and fifty a week.

How much are you getting?" Happy Honeymoon Arlene Dahl and Lex Barker, we hear from France, got the biggest press reception ever accorded stars visiting Paris. After spending a few days with Charles Mendl in Pans, the couple left' Tlnme last week-end. Naples, Florida, is declaring a Gary Cooper day to celebrate the actor's birthday this week. A barbecue and square dance, with Coop calling the numbers, are planned among other things. Gary's there with the picture "Distant Drums." Gene Tier-ney says that when she goes to Europe this summer, she'll buy a flock of Fath and Dior gowns.

Far from being jealous, her designer husband, Oleg Cassini, will help her pick them. Marie Wilson, talking to a Hollywood furrier, said, "I've just figured out why you spread your mink coats on the floor to show to customers. It's to provide a soft place on which they can faint you mention the prices." Walt's most amhitinnc unH. taking in the live action field. No actor is set yet for the part of the balmy but lovable Spanish gran- dee.

Dannv Kave once was mpn- tioned lor the role, and that wouldn't be bad casting. Walt doesn't have to worry about his cartoon features as he's far ahead in plans for them. "Alice in Wonderland" will be completed for release this summer: "Peter Pan" is in the animation stage and should be ready for the theaters next year. "Sleeping Beauty" will be finished in 1953, and "Hia-! watha" in 1954. Cochran Arrives Our spies tell us that Steve Cochran becomes a real star with "Tomorrow Is Another Day." So Bryan Foy, being a hep producer, is grabbing him for "The Tanks Are Coming." Lew Seiler has been set as a director for the picture, which will be shot at Fort Knox, Ky.

Bryan produced "Breakthrough," one of Warner's biggest money-makers of last year. Paramount, preparing for a flock of musicals, is making a producer of Robert Emmett Dolan, the composer and music director. The studio also has siened Oscar Hammerstein's son, William as a producer. He arrives here this month to start work, with his specialty, of course, being musicals. William, who the fourth generation of Hammersteins in show business, has been associated with Leland Hayward in New York.

Janet Gaynor has been getting movie offers ever since she and Charlie Farrell did "Seventh Heaven" on the air several weeks ago, but she's not accepting any. "I did that broadcast purely for sentiment's sake," said she. "I hope people won't think I'm trying for a film comeback." Gilda Goes Over From New York, the boss reports: "Gilda Gray, former shimmy queen, is here making a comeback on television. She looks better than she has in years. Gilda made a fortune in the old days before the big income tax, but didn't hold onto it.
