Otto, died 16 years ago, came to Chicago from Germany men's center No. 1 on Washington it was learned today. The colonial empires which were protected during the war by a billion dollar string of American air and naval bases, staffed by thousands of American GIs and sailors, have never seen more than a handful of European troops in the whole area since Lord Nelson and other warriors of the 19th century moved! 1 I 1 ft A ilULUII a I LA V- Maintain One Keiriment The British maintain one regiment, the Suffolks, of about 1.200 United Kingdom soldiers on this island, the most turbulent place in the British West Indies in recent years. Most British colonial garrisons consist of half a dozen white British officers commanding a battalion or two of native troops, whose chief duty is to keep order among the na years ago sne is survived cy afor mQre than 2Q He is sur. son.

Arthur, former state representa-jvived twQ brotherS( William and five's and act as honor guard forifive great-grandchildren Services the colonial governor on state occasions. The Leeward Islands colony, at last report, had five white officers and three British ratings in command of a native battalion. Include Colonial Police British Guiana claims to have mustered 6,000 troops for defense, but British whites occupied only a dozen rr so top commands and the remainder wi re natives. This garrison includes the colonial police who are minor! under military discipline and home guards who undoubtedly make up the majority. One white British company Is stationed in the Bahamas, where Edward Windsor, brother of King GeoiKe formerly ruled as governor, but British Honduras is garrisoned only by one native battalion.

In Trinidad the British still hold a small naval station on the site of America's giant Heet operations base on the Chaguaramas peninsula, but it has been reduced to caretaker status and only a half dozen British naval officers in staff positions arc stationed in the colony. Each British colonial governor has his military aide and some, such as John IIUEuins. titled governor here, have military staffs. French Sent Home The French colony of Guadeloupe has 150 white French gendarmes, but they are regarded as police rather than soldiers. In French Guiana, regiments of French troops once guarded prisoners on Devil's Island colony but have been shipped home during the past 10 years as the prison was liquidated.

The French also had a company of 170 Senegalese in Guiana, but they were returned to France after the riots in Cayenne last February. A dozen or so French officers remain in the colony. The Dutch hold tiny possessions ranging from Saba Island on the north to Surinam Dutch Guiana, Curacao and Aruba off the coast of South America. Like England and France, they have relied on the United States to protect their Caribbean colonics during two wars. B.
