Chil dren, many in arms, waved back at Santa and marveled at the magic floats. Cute Majorettes Dance There were gigantic cats, bumpti ous balloons, spelling out "Hello" and, the adults, dancing majorettes with short flaring skirts. Santa's reindeer pranced, too. The parade was led by a guard of honor from the 170th Infantry Regiment, and the series of floats was punctuated by brass bands and somersalting clows. One little girl, held by her mother, pointed enthusiastically at gigantic jeep-powered float sport- ng a facsimile of the old woman in shoe and surrounded by costumed lilliputians.

To the obvious dis comfort of her near-by father, she piped: Daddy, I want that for Christ mas. Halted By War The parade was inaugurated in 1936 and continued annually until the war. It was interrupted in 1943 and resumed last year. Starting at Charles and Thirty-first street, it proceeded down Charles street to Mount Royal avenue, went west on Mount Royal to Cathedral, south to Franklin, west on Franklin to Howard, and south on Howard to Lexington. Among the more fascinated spec tators in the opening stages of the parade was a little boy who had to be physically restrained from marching behind a troop of Roy Scouts carrying American flags.

Helped back on the curbing by a sympathetic policeman, he turned to his brother near by and asked: Harry, how many days until Christmas?" discovered Rthe joy of Christmas shopping. No more crowds to battle and plenty of salespeople to wait on you. You'll love it. Why, at Edmondson Village, of course. Ercninf Sun Washington Bureau Washington.

Nov. 27 Jerry Ra pillo, the "Patent Leather Kid" of boxing circles and currently on leave of absence as chief of the two-man police force in Berlin, is in more trouble. A warrant was sworn out here last night charging him with false pretense. He is accused specifically of taking a $15 down payment for sublease on a store, the com plainant contending that Rapillo was unable to grant a sublease be cause his own lease had expired. Slot-Machine Angle The 47-year-old ex-pugilist, who was asked by the Town Council to take a few days off while a contro versy raged around his manner of performing the duties of police chief, says that citizens of the Eastern Shore town (population 2,000) are seeking his ouster because he is trying to rid the town of slot machines.

The Berlin Business Men's Asso ciation last Friday asked the Town Council to obtain Rapillo's resignation because of his way of enforcing parking regulations. A storekeeper, William Rayne, said the chief tried to hit him with blackjack in a dispute over a parking ticket. "Best Interest Of Town" E. Bowen Quillen, president of the Council, explained that it was felt in he best interest of the town "if Rapillo refrained from duty for a few The chief came back to his for mer home in Washington, and was scheduled to go back to Berlin at the end of this week to resume his work. Rapillo was a storm center even before the dispute over the parking regulations.

The town three policemen resigned during his first week of tenure, which drew a com ment from the chief that "I guess was too tough." Teen-Age Support The former boxer had organized band and several boys' groups, and around 100 teen-agers rallied his support last Friday night after business men in a mass meeting had called for his resignation. Rapillo, here on a vacation, said, "The kids and their parents in Berlin are for and explained that he was trying to stop child delinquency flourishing around slot machines in beer parlors and pool rooms. He said that he was sure that the Mayor and the Council would be "behind me 100 per cent" when he goes back from his vacation. Payment On Store" The warrant was issued here on complaint of Jesse Shumate, who claimed he paid Rapillo $15 as down payment on the sublease of store where Rapillo had an elec trie shop. Rapillo was released on $50 bond, and he is to appear in police court here tomorrow.

Address 12315. Sun By William E. Pyne Maryland's population includes approximately 202,556 World War II veterans, the United States Census Bureau reported today. The veteran population figure, computed from spot survey statistics obtained by the census agency last spring, represents about 9 per cent of the estimated State population of 2.215.000. The calculated 202.556 veteran residents are 12.172 fewer than the 214.728 Maryland inductees discharged by the armed forces up to April 1.

This difference, according to a Census Bureau official, does not mean, however, that there has been a postwar exodus of veterans from Maryland since the end of World War II. See No Permanent Shift "It is conceivable that Maryland has gained some veterans as permanent residents since the end of the war," Norman Lawrence, of the Census Bureaus population esti mation section, said. The number of veterans calcu lated to be Maryland residents was computed following an interim survey of employment, housing and population in several districts of the Baltimore metropolitan area early this year, he explained. In addition. Lawrence said there is no reflection of permanent population changes in the difference between the estimated number of veteran residents and the total of Maryland inductees discharged by the armed forces.

Workers Inducted "Thousands of residents of other states were employed in Maryland's war industries and. when called to military service, were inducted from the draft board area in which they were working," the census official said. He noted further that because the present veteran population estimate and the armed forces discharge statistics were computed on different bases it would be impos sible to interpret any population changes from them. Must Estimate Figures Lawrence declared that in the absence of any World War II veteran classification in the Census Bureau's 1940 population enumeration, future statistics showing increases or losses of veterans in population figures will necessarily be estimates. In addition to Maryland, other Middle Atlantic States which showed differences between present estimated veteran populations and armed forces discharges were West Virginia, with 18.045, and Pennsylvania, with 17.663.

Fish-Line Extension Opponents Consolidate Annapolis. Nov. 27 (V) Claim ing representation of 34.000 small- boat owners, officials of the United States Power Squadron in the 5th Naval District and the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association met yesterday "to consolidate opposition" to a proposal which would extend fishing lines from the Virginia shore in the lower bay.

The lines now reach about 3 miles from shore; fishing firms have proposed they be permitted to ex tend them another 2 miles. William II. Labrot, commodore of the Yacht Club, declared operators of small vessels were against "any extension of the fishing-net area whatsoever," because it would cre ate navigation hazards in the area. His opposition is shared bv Gov William Preston Lane, of Mary land: John E. Clark, chairman of the State Department of Tidewater fisheries, and the naval officers.
