B4 PcMM THE SUN, Tuwday, November CBS keeps kids up late for ratings' sake -JS. I Carter jfl CBS did not do the families of America any favors over the weekend. It was wonderful that one of the all-time children's movies, "Mary Popping" got on TV at last, of course, but CBS managed to schedule the three-hour film in such a way that it was highly unlikely that children under 10, say-could reasonably watch it all on a night before school. Then the film got started late, because of those now all too predictable football run-overs-whlch, let's be frank here, CBS uses to great ratings advantage on Sunday nights. The result was appalling for many parents who wanted to give their children a chance to see "Mary Poppins." They either had to let the children stay up until about 11:30, or they had to send the children to bed right in the middle of the movie.

CBS would protest that it can't know movie was make the minor adjustment of moving its cast-iron hit, "60 Minutes," from its 7 p.m. start to a 10 p.m. start. The movie could then have run from 7 to 10 or 7:20 to 10:20 with the football runover-and the children and parents of America would have been well-served. And who would have been hurt? Presumably CBS thinks it would because it has such a huge audience for "60 Minutes" at 7 p.m.

But CBS has moved "60 Minutes" back to 10 p.m. on other occasions; and certainly "60 Minutes" qualifies as an adult show much more than "Mary Poppins" does. It may not have been a decision that makes a great deal of difference in the vast ocean of TV programming, but it certainly did not endear CBS to parents who had to deal with sleepy-eyed kids Sunday night and Monday morning. XL about how long the football game will go. It would also argue that a blockbuster movie like "Poppins" mandates the full exposure of the prime-time period of 8 to 11 on Sunday night.

It's all a bunch of baloney. All CBS had to do to be responsible in the scheduling of this Ho hum two more 'cute television detectives jBlB. CBS is rather open about admitting its source. Last year that network wound up with a surprising new hit in a series called "Magnum P.I.," a show that might be said to have founded the school of the beefcake detective. With that show firmly in place, what did CBS look for? Another one, what else? Why try something new when you can just duplicate? So the producers took a couple of good-looking, male-model-type guys (the secret of "Magnum" is the male-model lead, Tom Selleck), planted them in an exotic sort of setting (it was supposed to be Florida but that proved too costly so it was moved to the San Diego marina), and gave them wide berth to cut up as they pleased. The result, in tonight's first episode, is straight-up standard TV series fare: one more detective show. The unfortunate thing, as least as far as the stars, Gerald McRaney and Jameson Parker, are concerned, is that they actually do have a smidgeon of personality that gives the formula format a slice of appeal that most of the detective shows already on the air lack.

The two guys work together well; the offhand, anti-hero style has a record of success in TV (see Jim Rockford, NBC, 1974-80); and tonight's pilot even introduces a catchy theme song. What more could you ask for in a TV show? Well, how about some originality? Tonight's plot is a tired old story of political corruption, with the bad-guy politicos up to no good, mixed up with the mob, pay-off plots to take over the city and blah, blah, blah. McRaney and Parker have some nice bits of business mixed in, but if this is another TV show that intends to survive on its bits of business because its plots are so weak, I think it's time to declare a total moratorium on detective work on television. Maybe it's time for a run on series involving clergy. Bill Carter Join now and Holiday's history you Tirn months.

Or, in this case, do we really need two more detectives on TV? Television surely employs more detectives than a Texas millionaire with an adulterous wife. They come in all forms-police and private, male and female, black and white, animal and mineral. There is such a glut of detectives on television that it doesn't really matter that new additions might be mildly appealing. They are applying for a position that already has been grossly overfilled.

This is the profoundly irritating situation facing a couple of guys named Simon as they seek to make their fortunes as TV series characters starting tonight. "Simon and Simon" are detectives, brother detectives, and their show occupies space that might be taken up by some non-detectives tonight at 8 on Channel 2. Detectives come from any of a number of "schools," of course streetwise, tough-guy, hard-boiled, cerebral, etc. The Simon brothers belong to a school unique to series television: cute detectives. Or, as one of the female viewers this show is obviously intended to appeal to might put it: beefcake detectives.
