L. Mencken, author of "The American Language," 3n an interview the other day with Prof. Cabell Greet of Barnard college, CBS consultant on speech, on a School of the Air broadcast. "My guess is," the sage of Baltimore explained, "that the radio will help midwestern American prevail throughout the country. It is bound to prevail anyhow.

It is somehow harsh, but on all other counts it is a really excellent speech. It's only serious rivals, the Boston and southern dialects, are much inferior to it Jn every way, and so is the southern English that is standard in England." Mr. Mencken's expression is not altogether prophetic. On the major networks, even when programs originate in the east, few announcers accents that identify them with the east or south are permitted. Only one we can recall offhand with a Harvard accent as broad as Mr.

Roosevelt's is John O'Connor, a Boston lad. Of course there are certain snooty perfume and cosmetic sponsors who insist on a voice with a Park avenue sound to it. But in the main, wherever speech can be controled in broadcasting, a modified midwestern is already the choice. Fred Allen is one lad who can go to Hollywood without going Holly wood. With Lionel Stander, former associate and now a Hollywood tough guy, as his guest, he did a thorough job of deflating the typical Hollywood love feast type interview.

Instead of exchanging lavish and extravagant compliments and indulging in other kylocyclic backscratching as is usually the case when movie m. c. presents a star, they said what was in their hearts. Stander pushed off with "Your face is just about the worst I have ever galloped my astigmatism over." To this salute Allen retorted, "You'd shrivel a Boy Scout at 20 paces." That, of course, was only the beginning. Allen has a new feature he call3 People You Never Expected to Meet," which enables him to give his talents in mild insult full play.

First person examined was a boy autograph collector, a glib youth, who returned blow for blow. Nancy Wicker, 11 year old daughter of Irene Wicker, the Singing Lady, is to make her first radio appearance on W-G-N-Mutual at 4 p. m.

VP) Gus Oliva who had $4,600,000 eight years ago came to town today with $1.20 in his pockets and a patch on his pants. He faces a theft charge in Los Angeles.

One year the former newspaper carrier paid the government a quarter of a million in taxes on a fortune he reaped in the stock market. He donated thousands to charity. He spent other thousands to furnish his Russian Hill apartment to rival that of Templeton Crocker, multi-millionaire. Some say Oliva bet on a California-Stanford football game. Then bad investments cleaned him and now he faces a Los Angeles charge of putting up a $1,700 ring as security on a loan, but a cheap ring showed up in its place.

On Dec. 13 friends of Gus will give a testimonial entertainment to finance his defense. He denies any guilt. 5. A.
