10 JOPIJN GLOBE, SATITRDAY, FFBWARY 21, 1918. LONDONER CONFIDENT NATION MURECOVER Brown Says Britain Will Overcome Economic Woes, in Talk Before Social Agencies' Council. Tom Brown of London, England, who talked yesterday noon before a meeting of the Joplm Council Social Agencies at the Y. C. A.

expressed confidence that his country will work its way out of the present economic struggle because of the strong inorale of Its people. The speaker traced the history of the economic situation England and the place the countiy held in the world scheme at the beginning of World War II, saying: "At the end of the war England had suffered much, 1,000,000 homes had been destroyed--millions were badly damaged, i churches, clubs and other buildings and more than one-half of its ships had been destroyed The country no longer had foieign investments to make returns, because these investments had been Golden Anniversary raw materials and equipment. Says Machinery is Needed. "It was then that the government decided it best to cut rations of the people in order to make capital investment in machinery, thereby increasing eventually the abi'ity to be self-supporting," he continued, adding that he was of the opinion that machinery is one of the most needed items in Britain's economic lecovery. In answer to the query, "Is England bankrupt?" Brown pointed out that when a countiy can impose such drastic restrictions upon its people and those people voluntarily co-operate, that country is not bankrupt." The speaker enumerated parts of the present program of recovery, which includes the production of steel.

Vorkers have raised the level of production above that Of 1939 and coal production has improved materially during the last year, he stated. "England is not meiely desirous of being an ally of the United States, but wants to prove that is capable. People and government are working hard together to make her a good ally. For better or for worse. Great Britain and America are destined to become the woild leaders and to lead by example of greatness.

"I believe the English people who suffered more during the war are intensely grateful to America and would want me to say, Thank you America," he concluded, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Marshall partly for I a 1718 Byers avenue, will ob- agricultuial theij ddmg anniversary Sunday. Mr. and Mrs Gary McBee have returned to their home in Deming, Manvel H. (Cap) Davis, Kansas, City attorney, and candidate for the republican nomination for governor, yesterday predicted a republican victory in Missouri this fall but only after a bitter fight. Missouri, along with other border states the nation, will be the scene of close races between re publican and democrat forces seek ing to put their candidates in fice, he said. Besides Missouri being a borde state, Davis called attention to th fact it also is President Truman home state Opposed Truman in 1940.

Davis was republican senatona candidate in 1940 when Presiden Tiuman was re-elected to th senate. He stopped in Joplm yes Lerday afternoon en route to Ne osho where he was one of th speakers at the annual Lincoln da banquet of the Newton County Re publican Women's Club last night With one trip around the state already behind him, Davis said his observations indicate a republican victory in November. The victory of a Henry A. Wai lace-supported congressional can didate in the New York Bronx this week is not indicative of the independent presidential candidate's strength throughout the na tion, especially in Missouri, he declared. He expects Wallace forces to poll from 20,000 to 30,00 vote? Missouti.

That might be enough he said, to decide the election IP favor of either the democrat republican candidates. The candidate said he had certain views and a program he planned to present later concerning state institutions and public roads Hopper Funeral Monday.
