better or worse than the preliminary indications. It is no secret, of course, that a dozen research laboratories in this country are vigorously pushing the search for a substitute for quinine and atabrine. Whether or not we run into a shortage of these two drugs, doctors would like to have a better malaria remedy than either of them. Although of great importance to the person with an acute attack of malaria, neither quinine nor ajta-brine can be relied on to remove the germs completely from the patient's blood. Neither have they true preventive action, although Fort Meade soldier's life last December 2 by pinch-hitting for a surgical clamp (and that means really pinching), will receive a bronze Vail medal for his fortitude Doesn't Recall Name His name? The two drugs are promin, which is being tested also as a possible tuberculosis remedy, and sulfadiazine. The pre-war reports, on the anti-malaria action of these drugs were somewhat encouraging, but their present status is a military secret.

to explain discrepancies between the names they use and the official birth records or immigration records. Court decrees already have authorized name changes for seventy-nine of this year's petitioners. The petitions are filed in either the Circuit Court or the Circuit Court No. Adoption cases also are in the same tribunals and court clerks stated that the number of adoptions has been increasing. Families Involved Name changes sometimes involve whole families.

There were nine members in the largest family to come before the courts in 1942. Reasons vary, but the generally prevailing reasons are that the petitioners already have used the desired name for some time and find it "more euphonious" than their original appellation. In one case, a woman whose real name was "Fannie," mere sought to have it changed to "Frances." Many of the Polish petitioners have complained their real names are too hard for their acquaintances to spell or pronounce.
