With the tremendous rapidity with which the polarity of the electrodes is switched, the positive and negative poles of the molecules of the insects are shifting, too. The energy thus created results in more heat than the insect can radiate. As al result, insect, pupa, larva and egginfestation--is internally cooked.

unlike the plant that 1 is much slower to develop the heat. "This switch of polarity is probably the explanation of the 'death rays' we hear about from time to time. A great many people, however, have the idea that a 'death ray' is something that can be projected or pointed at any object in any direction. "Uncomfortable For Man" "But my guess is that the much publicized rays' are merely amplifications of this principle--that is, greater voltage in a larger electrostatic field. For I know one thing, that if a man passed through the small field we have been using in the laboratory, he'd have a pretty uncomfortable time of it.

Leave him in it long enough and it would kill him, despite the fact that his high development allows him to radiate heat much more readily than an insect." Dr. Headlee was one of thirty-two entomologists who read papers at today's meeting. The subjects ranged from experimental work in laboratories to the latest demonstrations of practicable insect-control work in the field.
