Who's News • Last time I saw TV journalist Maria Shriver, she didn't look her usual robust self. Is something going on with her health? Jill Hoffmann, Durham, N.C. It hasn't been a good year, health- wise, for either Shriver or her box- office star husband, Arnold Schwarz- enegger; they've been taking turns taking care of each other. Shriver, 41 and expecting her fourth child in late summer, was hospitalized early in the pregnancy for a condition that wouldn't allow her to keep food down. At press time, she was back in good health. Just last month, Schwarzen- egger, 49, underwent surgery to replace a defective heart valve. Still, at press time he planned to go to Europe to promote summer's Batman & Robin — he's Mr. Freeze. • Howard Stern claims he's the most popular radio talker of his kind. Is he? Christina Gonzalez Bronx, N.Y. Stern, 43, has about 12 million daily listeners, putting him behind Rush Limbaugh and Laura Schlessinger. But when it comes to ranking radio talkers who don't specialize in a particular topic, Stern is tops. He reminds me a lot of Johnny Depp. Tell us about his background. Ketanya Sepal North Kingford, NJ. Born Bryan Ray Ulrich in North Carolina, he was nicknamed Skeet by a baseball coach. He has paid his dues with small parts in several movies, but this looks to be his "breakout" year, relentless comparisons to Depp notwithstanding. At 26, Ulrich is part of Hollywood's young talent pool, which has given him the confidence to move to New York. His girlfriend is actress Leonora Scelfo. Ulrich is tired of being compared to Johnny Depp. • I'm sure I read that Matt Lauer was engaged when he first arrived at the Today show. Did I miss something? I don't remember anything about a wedding. Linda Johnson, Detroit When Lauer, who took Bryant Gumbel's co- anchor seat in January, joined Today as the morning newsreader in 1993, he was indeed engaged. But you missed nothing — there was no wedding, and the engagement is over. Lauer, 39, who has been married once, may now | be counted among New | York City's most eligible g bachelors. Unfortunately, | his hours — he's due at Today's Manhattan studio as early as 4 a.m. — don't allow for an active social life. At least not a late-night social life. • I'm a big fan of Paul McCartney - although, at 14, admittedly much younger than most. I hear he has a new album, and I'm dying to get it. Jill Adkins, Louisville Flaming Pie, the ex-Beatle's first solo album in four years, should be in stores Tuesday. All those Beatles anthology discs inspired him, he says, and nearly all of Pie's 14 songs were written while he was promoting them. McCartney, 54, recently knighted by Queen Elizabeth, sings and plays bass, guitar, piano and drums. Also on the album: his wife, Linda, now recovering from breast cancer, and fellow ex-Beatle Ringo Starr. • I met actress Lynn Whitfleld at the president's second inaugural and found her refreshingly friendly. What is she working on now? Joan Fraccola, Marcy, N.Y. Whitfield, best known for starring in 1991's Josephine Baker Story, is producing a movie on radical '60s activist Angela Davis, in which she'll star.
