Thoso in other will receive no benefit from it, "but departments are more fortuuate as they are exempt from this requirement. We were sorry to learn last week that the wife of Prof. Oilman of the Law Department, of the University, was the victim of scarlet fever, and that the Professor would be uuable to attend to his duties for some weeks. Bsrryhill is still holdiug up to the place he took ia Davenport the past summer, and will probably be the University pitcher this year, as his trial game was satisfactory. The social season opens this week with Fraternity parties, aud a party at Hani's Hall on Thursday night. Tho opera house also opened for the season on Friday night last, Mattio Vickers playing Jacquine to a small but enthusiastic audience. The committee cu sports has leased the Iowa City ball park for the school year, and it will be used for foot ball and base ball games, when weather aud work will permit, till the University closes in the spring. Davenport trade will be "diverted to other Island will be the loser from the Island will not "be helped in any net degree," but it is almost certain that its fate leans to the other will hurt Rock Island trade, you say--granted.

It will. It is useless for Rock Island to talk otherwise, or Davenport either. Now there are live quotations taken separately from the live extracts published by the Union aud credited to Dem. and this just before the Rock Island city council are to decide (tonight) on ordinances, the right ol way secured, enabling the company now owning tho street railroads on both sides, to connect them by a railway across the bridges and island, as they have a government charter to do if approaches can be secured on the Rock Island city side. This project has been opposed and delayed for many years, through the influence of the ferry company.

Why did not the Union in making these extracts, explain they were all taken from a paper whose pro- prietoisare stockholders in this ferry company? Because it would have de stroyed the very purpose of their origin and of the Union's copying. That pur pose is to alarm the people of Rock Island about an imaginary loss of trade, and thus affect the votes of aldermen. This idea or design is certainly cou- tined to the Daeeuport stockholders in the ferry company. The people here have nothing to do with it. They are grossly misrepresented.
