A new legislative act enables young people between 18 and 21 to work for the party of their choice by circulating the petitions, explained state Democratic Chairman Zolton Ferency. And if they do a good job, he indicated, the present voting age of 21 may be lowered by lature. "Michigan youths between the ages of 18 and 21 now will, for the first time, be able to participate fully and legally in one of the more important phases of the electoral process," Ferency said. "If the youth of our state are encouraged and perform well in the circulation of nominating petitions, their conduct in this vital area of citizenship responsibility will stand them in good stead when the question of the 18-year-old vote is put to the voters," he said.
