TlmM M«MM , iewtH, It. W«dn«iday, Nov. 25, 1»70 Man Victim of the Things He's Created By HAL BOYLI NEW YORK (AP) —Jumping to conclusions: Neither too muah wine nor the pains and pangs of old age bring out the worst in a man's personality as much as having to drive in crowded traffic when he's in a hurry to get somewhere. Yet man persists in making his inventions bis gods —the automobile, the airplane, plastics, the computer—and in the end they may destroy him by making 'him too neurotic to endure. Already he is at the mercy of linings he created to make his life more leisurely and comfortable. The dullest conversation possible this time of year is that between two suburbanites discussing the troubles they have getting to and from work in bad weather—and the new ways they plan to attack crabgrass next spring. One of the mysteries of life is why so many secretaries fall in love with their boss when they know so much more about him than his wife does. Experience Is like a secondhand car. You may regard it as valuable but you can never sell it at a profit ft anyone else. If you took flhe words "stupid and 'cool" out of the average teen-ager 's vocabulary, fee'd be half tongue-ffcied. A man who makes hi* first million is never happy until he makes his second just to prove to himself What the first one wasn 't all luck. A philosopher Is a man who rthe longer Ihe lives, feels the less he knows for sure— and therefore is willing to learn from younger people who are more confident of tlheir wisdbm. One of the troubles with telling your troubles is that half the people you tell them to don't give a hoot, and tha other half are glad you finally got your comeuppance. Things could be worse. If men wore antlers like moose, it would be even more of a nuisance riding to work by bus or subway. A successful bachelor is a guy who can give three girls lingerie for Christmas and still stay free. There is plenty to be grateful for this Thanksgiving Day. For example, in a noisy world half the pianos in America bought by parents to instill music in tlheir children relapse into silence within six months and become simply pieces of living room furniture. The only sounds they make are When they're dusted. Children Can Phone Santa CLARINDA - Before he packs up his sleigh this year, Santa will be listening personally to hints from youngsters about what they 'd like to find under their Christmas tree. Just by dialing 542-2183 (area code 712), a youngster will hear Santa answer the telephone from his North Pole home. In case he's busy, Mrs. Santa may take the call. "Santa's Ansering Service," a project of the patients at the Clarinda Mental Health Institute, will be in operation from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 15 to 23. The Clarinda Lions Club will provide back-up services and the patients will at all times be supervised by hospital employees. The telephones for "Santa" have been donated to the project by the Clarinda office of General Telephone. Teachers or club leaders who wish to have a group of youngsters call Santa all at one time are asked to contact Lyle Ridnour of the Activity Therapies Department at the institute to arrange a time.
