After Gallaher lost four yards on a sweep to the left, Lane dumped the ball over the middle to Terry Antrum at the 5 and he raced into the end zone. Rhody went right to the end zone on its first play from the 25, but cornerback Kevin Johnson knocked down a pass from Greg Farland to Emerson Foster. Farland threw incomplete on second down and, after completing a pass to Doug Haynes to the 18, he was intercepted by UConn strong safety Scott Daniels on fourth down to end the game. It was Farland's sixth interception of the day. He completed 32 of 56 attempts for 299 yards.

Daniels also had an interception at the UConn 30 with 16 seconds left in regulation, killing a Rhody drive. Linebacker Mike Jansen also had two interceptions. Free safety Dwayne Miller and linebacker Troy Ashley each had one. Dunn, who had seven catches for 124 yards, set up the score with a 24-yard reception in heavy traffic to the 1. Rhody, which came into the game with a 1-8 record, answered immediately when Chris Poirier took the kickoff 89 yards to make it 14-7. The Rams then recovered an onsides kick and marched 59 yards in 10 plays, tying the game on a 1-yard run by Haynes with 9:40 to go.

"We've done everything but win ballgames this year," Rhody Coach Bob Griffin lamented afterwards. "It's very easy to keep fighting and fighting when you're getting a reward every Saturday, but to keep doing it week after week without that reward says a lot about our team. I can't fault them for their effort. And Connecticut, well, this is probably the best team I've seen in my 11 years at Rhode Island." Jackson was equally impressed with Rhode Island's effort. "We had all we could handle from them today," he said.

"It would have been easy for them coming in here 1-8 not to play hard. It was as if we were playing for the championship out there." Asked how he liked the overtime format, Jackson broke into a grin. Little-used Detmer said of his first, only and greatest catch, "They just told me to line up inside the wing, take off on a fly pattern and look inside.

I did and the ball was there." Detmer, not listed in the Yale press guide, is a hurdler on the track team. Ryan, who completed 19 of 31 for 291 yards, broke Brian Dowling's single-season Yale passing record with a total of 1,679 yards. He threw three interceptions, however, giving him 11 in the last three games. Cozza expressed joy for his seniors in their farewell home game, pointing out that a Yale victory over Harvard next week would give the Elis the coveted "Big Three" championship, a private title contested by Yale, Princeton and Harvard. Princeton Coach Ron Rogerson, whose team had defeated Harvard and was a couple of minutes from clinching the Big Three, just shook his head over the stunning defeat.

"This is an absolute nightmare," he said. "I can't accept it I couldn't believe it then. I can't believe it now. I'm absolutely heartbroken for our seniors. We were on the threshold of something so good Big Three." Duryea gave Yale a 3-0 lead with a 21-yard field goal early in the second quarter, but Princeton tied it on Rob Goodwin's 43-yarder with 1:21 remaining in the half.

Princeton moved 67 yards in 11 plays for its only touchdown on the opening drive of the second half, Jerry Santillo running 19 yards uo the middle for a 10-3 lead. Unforgettable. Down 13-3 with 143 seconds to play, Yale scored 11 points in the next 87 seconds via a 62-yard touchdown pass play from Kelly Ryan to Wayne Detmer, a two-point conversion pass to Jim Griffin, a recovered onside kick on the Princeton 16 and a game-winning 17-yard field goal by John Duryea all before a stunned crowd of 22,202. Coach Carm Cozza rated it among his most memorable victories in 22 Yale seasons.

"I didn't think anything could cap a last-minute victory over them two years ago," Cozza said. "But this does." In a game it had led only in turnovers (5-0), Yale was seemingly on its way to its fourth straight defeat when Ryan hit the swift Detmer to reduce the margin to 13-9. It was the first college catch for Detmer, a Yale sophomore and a third-stringer who hadn't played, football since his sophomore year in high school. On the conversion, Ryan ran out of the pocket and hit Griffin alone in the end zone to make it 13-11. Duryea's ensuing onside kick bounced off the fingers of Princeton's Mark Dexter.

Yale's Jose Egur-bide, reaching for the elusive ball, accidentally kicked it to the Princeton 16, where deep back Derek Was-sink fumbled it into the hands of Buddy Zachery. A pass to Ted Macauley and a facemask penalty moved the ball to the Princeton 8. An incomplete pass and two runs by Macauley put the ball on the one-foot line on fourth down, with the goal posts at a sharp angle. Despite urging by his players to go for the touchdown, Cozza called for Duryea to provide the kick that lifted Yale to 3-6 (2-4 Ivy) and dropped Princeton to 2-7 (3-3 Ivy.) "The footing wasn't firm," Cozza explained. "I was afraid of one of our running backs slipping." Carrying the first game ball ever awarded by Cozza to a kicker, Duryea said he refused to succumb to the pressure.
