Special.) Connecticut deleaved Massachusetts by nine to six in an Interstate golf match today at Belmont Spring. It was the first 'defeat of a Massachusetts team against all corner In two seasons of play and the second victory for Connecticut in the 20 years of rivalry between the two states. Massachusetts played without the services of most of Its best golfers, yet the upset came about as a distinct surprise after the results of the five Scotch foursomes matches had been posted at noontime. Connnectlcut squeezed out only a single point in the morning play and was carried, an extra hole to get that, but in the afternoon singles the Bay State golfers Yale Freshmen and emerged with only two points out of the ten Individual engagements. Bill McPhall of Norfolk was three up on Paul of Brooklawn going to the eighth and then the former Yale captain played well enongh to be one under par for the remaining holes. Herbert Jaques of the Country Club had a two lead on Kenneth Reid of Farmlngton at the sixth hole and four holes later the Connecticut youngster was leading by two holes.

Joe Batchel-der of Wentham had a like experience. He was three up going to the ninth with Parker Seeley of Brooklawn and then for the remaining holes needed to complete the match Seeley was two under even fours. The -best medal of the day was reported from the bottom of the playing order by Sam Smart of Goodwin Park. When he had Chick Grasse of Mount Pleasant beaten on the 15th Green he needed three pars for a 72. Smart showed' the Lowell youngster something startling in the line of lofty putting.

Ward beat Cllve Alvord of Greenwich by 4 and 2, while the state Junior champion gave George Smart of Warn-panoag a 5 and 4 trimming. Probably the greatest surprise of the whole match was the wide margin by which Grimball was beaten. Emery Strateton of Braeburn made a good comeback against Frank of Sequin. He lost four out of the first five holes and with that bad start he succeeded in carrying the match to the home green. McPhall, three up going to the eighth hole lost five successive holes to Haviland. George Smart and Sill gave Connecticut ttg only point in the Scotch foursome and they pulled out the match after Grim-ball and Milton Vedder had betn dcrmie to Vedder.
