nnd 72. UNDERTAKERS. Tl-lrd 7j.iv- IN THE SLIFER CASE DEFENSE PLAYS THUMP CABD IN OH.UNDY COUNTY THIAL --PAKEWE1L MISSIVE WAS MRS. SLIFER WRITER? If It is Wot Shown to Be Forgery It Will Doubtless Bring Accused Ulan His Freedom. Grundy Center, Sept.

defent-1! in the Slifor murder trial now in in this city, in which W. M. Slifer, a young Grundy county farmer, is accused of chloroforming his wife, plajed a trump card Saturday by the introduction in its testimony of a letter, purporting to have been written on the morning of the day preceding her death. If the validity of this letter can be proven, it will remove all doubt but that the woman's death was due to suicide, and will establish that the husband is innocent of any wrong doing. The letter Is in Mrs.

Slifcr's, handwriting, but the prosecution in the cabe lattempt to prove it a forgery. If this is not done, a verdict for the defendant is regarded as inevitable. The letter reads as follows; a. December 19, in03-- My Darling Will: No doubt by the time you find this letter your heart will be Very sad, but I want to tell you that on the 29th of October I bought a bottle of chloroform. I have used it for a purpose which I shall not tell, but I will this very night when we back from town and you go to sleep, swallow the remaining contents of that battle "You, dear Will, shall know nothing of this until you find me ilend.

5 have loved you dearly. You have been too good to me. "Tell them all good-bye for me, and sometime, darling, come over there when- they shall all be bpotless and you will lie welcomed with loving arms by your loving KATE." The finding of the letter, as thib story was told in the courtroom Saturday afternoon, wn-i not the least curious part of the whole im'ident. Slifer claims that as he was drawing on a pair of hobe a few mornings after ths death of his wife he felt something in the toe, and investigating, pulled out a piece of paper. Written on it were the "Seek aud ye shall find." A thorough search was made of the hous.0.

and after several days the letter. which was produced in court Saturday, it is claimed, was found hidden away behind a picture. The production of the letter in court was sensational In the extreme, and is generally regarded as the strongest bid for Slifer's liberty presented by the defense.
