The Republicans of Warren township announce the name of J- W. Rankin as a candidate for County Treasurer, subject to the decision of the Republican Convention of Wayne County, Iowa, In announcing the name of Mr. Kunkia, we do so with full confl dence in his honesty acd ability to perform the duties of said office. Many Republicans. The Republicans of Kichman township, would respectfully announce the name of Samuel D.

the jfentlenian who was to conduct it. concluded not to come the Grove The citizens showed much enterprise in the matter. 'I he Shenaudoah Post went oat of existence with last week's number. Mr. Hanley, the publisher, will begin the of a relig'ous paper, called the Firebrand, the initial number of which will appear week.

Isn't it wjndeiful what directions oine great minds will take. So.ue great scholar has figured up that if a snail humps himself he can travel a mile in fourteen All this is very learned, but of what use is such knowledge to the A slight ram fell Sunday but not enough to be of any great good. We are needing rain in this part of the country pretty bad. Bat not withstanding i'acr, crops are growing splendid and look well. With a good rain the prospect would be the best in years.

Tke Allerton Xews is doing noble work for its town and Wayne county, and it will be the means ot both receiving much benefit. The people of Aller- ur will not forget the News and its good work. People are begimng to realize the worth of a good home paper. The State Board of Health has ordered the railway commission to see that the various reforms in the matter of passenger coaches be effected without any delay. The board at the last meeting passed a resolution to the effect that the railway companies must change the location of drinking wat tanks in their roaches: also that the saws and axes must be kept at the outside and in the middle of the coaches.

The corumis feioners replied that they would give the matter immediate attention. There seems to be considerable inter- manifested regarding a celebration on the Fourth. 1 be has arrived ween active steps should be taken in the matter. Other around as are talking celebrate. 5 ami Hujieston should never be behind in matter.

We bave al- had good cfiriLraiions and there are many reasons to suppose we the largest celebration this year than ever berore. But the matt r. insist "be tasen ho'd of at Once, a meeting held and committees started to work, and we sugzest that a meeting be held some evening rhis week to start the good work. The coal enterprise came near reaching a standstill. The meeting last Wedses- evening was very er.thusiast-c but the proper amount of to insure success could not be raised, and hence no further progress could be made.

It is hard to tell now whether any further steps will be taken at present or not. Many are in favor ot continuing the work ol soliciting subscriptions, while others think the field has been over pretty thoroughly, ana not much headway can be made until there is more money in the country. We are inclined to believe that with a cood crop this j-er. will be no diflculty in raising money eoough on short notice to make the enterprise a grand success In conversation with same of the leaders of enterprise understand that they ara willing to go on with the good work now if they receive the proper encour- affement. Ws are told that there are quite a number of gentlemen who favored the and who.

although hardly felt able to take stock when salicted. yet stated that they would sub- ratlier than see the enterprise fail. If these gentlemen are still of ths opinion, and will come forward the good work will go on. We hope they will conclude to do so, and let the matter be pushed at once. I.fet us show the world that our enterprise still alive attd active.

Problem far Fanners- How many ot eats at 25 cents per bushel, will it take to pay the difference between a loan of 91.000, for five years, at 6 per cent interest, and the swine sum tor 5 at 10 per erut interest, or 8 per cent? Farm at 6 per cent annual interest. B- O. Poston. The Dubuque one of the ablest daily papers in Iowa in discuscinf the causes which led to the lowering ot railroad rates iu this state, fs convinced that the remedial agent in the accomplishment of the work was the Iowa press, which, irom the time the railroads seemed to proceed upon the hypothesis that the inter-state commerce law was made exclusively for their benefit, began a systematic antagonism to that position. It is quite certain that had the roads paid no attention to the demands of the daily press tor lower rates, such a feeling would have been aroused thioughout the state as have resulted in a special session of the legislature to make rates which would not ruin the manufacturing business in Iowa.

We are inclined to agree with theJHerald. that the press of the is entitled to the credit of the reduction named. The Iowa is one the most powerful factors for the advancement of Iowa interests in tha state, and this fact is becoming more prominent every day. In this particular the country weeklies do their full share if not more. Their field of work may net be as large as that ot the great city da- lies, but they are loyal to and ever faithful workeis for tkeir respective localities.

Xo class of men in Iowa has labored more untiringly for the general good of the state and the promotion ot her varied interests, than her editors, and it is a pleasure to know that the pie recognize this fact, and show a just appreciation of it, as is evidenced by tbe great first-class papers in the state. It Is a Fact. That Dr. Barter's Iron Tonic is cooling to the blood, controls excessive pres- piration, and will safely tide jou over that period characterized by headache, Tainting- spells, exhaustive spasmodic at- tections, and will give strength new life to the entire system. If tha coal enterprise has not been as active, perhaps, an it might be, have not become one bit discouarged, or lost one iota of faith iu Humeston's future.

We are ready to work for and push any enterprise thnt will add to otu advantages. We contend that Humeston is the best town in southern Iowa, and the failure of one or two enterprises, especially during the present close will not chancre our opinion or lessen our labor in behalf of our home one particle. There are many -ways that could be originated to build up and add attractions to our town, any or all of which will receive our hearty support when desired. It makes no difference to us who starts an enterprise, whether it be one who by-his kindness has won our trusting heart, or one wboin we couldn't Seve if he hired us to. So long as he works to build up Huuieston we will help him.

This exactly- tbe platform we stand on. We are not the only ones wlio are working- on this princi pie, for we could point to dozens of our neighbors who look at the matter as we do. and are always ready to assist every woitbr enterprise. This the only way good can be accomplished, and if every citizen will take liold in this way our town will be more prosperous than ever befcre. "But," says 'Tve no money to spare, tu help enterprises That may be true, but there are many ways you can h-4p without money.

You can always have a good won! for your town, and never a pooi word. Ton can patronize your home merchants, and make them inoie perous, and they in turn, wili increase their business and the prosperity of the town of which you mM eet your it'll share. To bring the rahtter down to a fine point, we must work for each other. It makes no differ- whether a merchant likes us or not, if we can get goods of him reasonable, and this fact is never denied, it pays us better to patronize him and keep the money at home than to send it to some foreign market, from which the money neyer returns. Again we must patronize home mechanics, so long they are fully capable of doing the work.

Should they become over-crowded, they can easily secure what assistance they need. If we work for one another and the general of the town, we will have all the boom we want and this is just exactly what the XEW ERA is working for. We do not wish to be understood that there any discensiou iu our NEW Everything in the Line of DRY GOODS NOTIONS. Just received. Our stock of BOOTS SHOES Is unsurpassed in this vicinity.

FREE TRADE. The reduction of internal revenue and tbe taking off of revenue stamps from Proprietary Medicines, no doubt hns largely benefitted the consumers, as as relieving the burden of home manufacturers.

Especially is this the case with Green's August Flower and Bogifae's German Syrup, as the reduction of thirty-sis cents per dozen, has been added to increase the size of the bottles containing these remedies, therebr giving oue-flfth more medicine in the To cent size. The Augiest Fifneer for Dyspepsia and Liver Complaint, and the German Syrup for Cough and Lung troubles, have perhaps the largest of any medicines in the world. The advantage of increased siz? of the bottles will be ape preciated bv the and afflicted, in vt-ry town and village in civilized countries Sample bottles for 10 cents remain the same size.
