D5 THE HARTFORD COURANT: Sunday, April 8, 1984 Prospects Growing Dimmer for Seeing Red Sox on TV GEORGE SMITH THE MEDIA season. Thev Red Sox fans in Connecticut, and else for that matter," will just have to accept the. fact that a majority of their team's games wpl not be seen on television this are hoping the two networks get together and combine their programming. That day doesn't appear very near, however. Lost in the shuffle this week was a quiet announcement that the Boston Celtics would be leaving Boston's WBZ, Channel 4, after next season, for independent WLVI, Channel 56.

The reason was more money, pure and simple. Channel 56, owned by Gannett, offered the Celtics $12.5 million for a five-year deal to televise the club's away games. WBZ, which had been doing a 25-game package for about $700,000 a season, dropped out of the bidding early. Channel 56 will not be network ing the Celtics games like WBZ did with Waterbury's Channel 20 this season, but those games will be available on cable in areas that receive the signal. Celtics home games will still be available on SportsChannelNew England, according to the pay-cable network's president, Ron Ryan.

The United States Football League continues to do very well for ABC this season in the ratings battle with CBS and NBC. Last week, for example, the game between the New Jersey Generals and Los Angeles Express achieved a 7.1 rating while CBS' TPC golf and the NCAA Women's basketball championship did a 6.1. the big boys in New York. Turner has often demonstrated he isn't afraid to shell out big money and lose big money -on sports programming. He paid, $17.6 million for live broadcast, rights to 38 NCAA football games in 1982 and 1983.

He lost nearly $1 million on two pro football, games when the NFL was on strike a couple of years ago and even offered a reported $126 mil--lion for baseball rights this sea- son. But Turner is thinking even ur-: ther down the road to 1987," when the National Football, League rights expire, and the" Olympic Games in 1988. BotKt events are looking at the pay-ca-, ble market. So, obviously, is. Turner.

It is expected that ABC will use all its economic muscle to keep Ted Turner from purchasing ESPN. ABC, which owns 15 percent of ESPN, has a right of first refusal on a remaining 70 percent of the company, which is now owned by Texaco. Turner, the Atlanta-based cable and sports mogul, is preparing a purchase offer for ESPN, one he hopes will give him a vehicle to challenge the three major networks for sports programming in the future. With television rights to the National Hockey League and National Basketball Association still up for grabs and the likelihood the Supreme Court will let colleges secure their own football deals next season, Turner could put severe economic pressure on will all be televised, but very few carry another pay-sports service in competition with SportsChan-nel. "SportsChannel is a very weak pay service, in terms of attracting subscribers and we're concerned that it (NESN) really might do as poorly," said Martha Fransson, vice president and general manager of Hartford CATV Inc.

"While we would like to carry it, we want to think this thing through completely." Sebastian Listro of Cox Cable of Greater Hartford said he didn't think there was that much interest in the Red Sox. "I don't think I'd get the subscribers," he said, adding that he had only two channels available, both scheduled for "must" carries this summer. Listro also cited a large "capital cost" involved in moving his receiver to pick up signals off Satcom 1R. Terry Johnson, programming director of United Cable in Plain-ville, said her system doesn't have the channel capacity to add an-, other pay service. "We've had some people call up and ask us to drop SportsChannel and pick up NESN, but we're not going to disappoint Yankee fans just to please Red Sox fans," she said, adding that most cable operators will get to see a majority of them.

The New England Sports Network, which has a contract to televise 87 regular-season games of the Red Sox over its pay-cable network this season, debuted Wednesday and Thursday from Anaheim, Calif. There wasn't a 'ingle cable system in New England that carried the games. Prospects for customers coming ofr line in time to catch most of the season are grim. In Connecticut, it's even worse. 'The problems are threefold.

Most cable systems aren't positioned to receive signals from Satcom 1R, most lack channel capacity and all are reluctant to 1 I sto I Blackwall I Whitewall f3FT mjmmr ZrV iMfFf 1 tABTAA a coeOC cOQQrt WV JkiZZ G78-15 $39.50 $43.50 I 1 mwmm rH78-15 I $41.20 I $45.40 gfc mmmmm. The number of body plies used. The kind of cord. And more. But most important, it tells you the brand name. That's especially critical, since all tires look so much alike-on the outside.

Next time you read a sidewall, look for the name Goodyear. It's a brand name you can trust for sure. fQ frNy MBGi CHARGER ifr Clefh uclctt. Dual raclinen. Cnr mm nut, sped, 2 2 tilr ngln, dual sid rvfttel fl fl ft fl mirtort, AMfMlwtthf78, WhiJtlwo)lKl II II bltd ttrat with iid( whelt.
