The annual pre-season game between the New.York Giants and New York Jets sports a fresh look Sunday night, with two rookie coaches present and some familiar faces missing.

The Giants play host to theJets at 8 p.m. in the exhibition opener for both clubs as Bill Parcells makes his debut at the Giants' helm after two years as defensive coordinator. Parcells has named Jeff Rutledge to start at quarterback, but the real quarterback battle will be between 1979 No. 1 draft pick Phil Simms, who has been sidelined by injury for 1 Vz years, and Scott Brunner, who took every snap for the 4-5 club in 1982. Simms saw his season wiped out last 28.

This, week, in a similar 'warmup, the best track and field athletes from 168 nations will compete in the -first-ever World in Helsinki, Finland. fM rt jriic uua migeies vijriiipiv; names die still a year away, but this is the last time athletes from West and East, from the third world and first, will have the opportunity to measure their skills against the competition they must inevitably face in Los Angeles. a iHt I if 1 I A UUV1VMII they were of the 1980 Moscow Olympic names. better than the Olympics," says U.S. sprint star Carl Lewis. "It's the first, so it's historic, and it's going to be a great, great meet." Lewis seems destined to be one of the primary reasons why. Other U.S. athletes who should shine include Julie Brown, Mary Decker, Steve Scott, Edwin Moses, Evelyn Ash-ford and Tom Petranoff As a child, Lewis idolized the great Jesse Owens, winner of four gold medals in the 1936 Munich Olympic Games.

Today, having surpassed all of his idol's best marks, Lewis is arguably the greatest track and field performer of all time. At the U.S. National Championships in June, he won three events the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and the long jump in one weekend. In the latter two events, his performances were the second best ever recorded. It's possible that Lewis will attempt next summer to duplicate Owens' four-gold-medal showing.

He could have competed in the same four events in Helsinki (the fourth is the 4X100-meter relay), and would have been favored in all four, but has elected to bypass the 200 meters to reduce the chance of injury. Nonetheless, he will be in the spotlight, and probably on the uppermost rung of the victory stand in every event he enters. Both Owens and Lewis set their records at the age of 22. In the 100-meter, Owens' Olympic-tying time was 10.3, Lewis' time was 10.27. In the 200 meters, Owens set an Olympic record of 20.7, while Lewis ran 19.75.

In the long jump, Owens leaped 26 feet, 5V4 inches, while Lewis spanned 28 feet, 10V inches. Much of this afternoon's TV coverage should be given over to the most historic race in this historic competition: the women's marathon. Never before has there been a women's marathon in a meet of this importance, but there will be one in Los Angeles, so the women are particularly anxious to see how they will stack up. Julie Brown of the United States has a good shot at the victory, having run an impressive 2:26 six weeks ago. Boston Marathon winner and world record holder Joan Benoit did not try out for the Helsinki squad.

To win, Brown will have to overcome Norway's Grete Waitz, noted for introducing women to fast marathon times and for her four New York City Marathon victories. Waitz has handled Brown easily in their several marathon encounters, but Brown has recently brought a new maturity to her road racing. She used to be exclusively a track runner, but is much stronger than in the past. American track fans, accustomed to national competition since the Mont-Teal. Olympics seven long years ago.

Their performances this week will tell how close they are to, or how far from, the dreamed-of 1984 Olympic Gold Medal. In past pre-Olympic years, American athletes have tuned up at the quadrennial- Pan American Games. Those Games will be held again later this month in Caracas, Venezuela, but the track and field competition will be nothing compared to Helsinki, where most top U.S. Olympic hopefuls have chosen to compete. Another measure of the importance 'of the World Championships is the expected full-strength participation of the Russians, East Germans and other Eastern bloc countries.

These nations 'don't often send their athletes beyond their own borders, preferring instead to prepare in relative secrecy. But because Olympic success is their ultimate goal, they will test the waters at a meet as crucial as the World Championships. NBC-TV will broadcast more than a dozen hours of event coverage from -Helsinki, beginning today at 2 p.m. This 3.by far the greatest amount of network TV time ever devoted to a non- Olvrrmip trark rnmnptitinn Thp week. Jets defensive linemen Joe Klecko and Abdul Salaam and was forced to undergo knee surgery.

Simms also missed the last half of the '81 season with a separated shoulder. Joining Rutledge in the Giants' backf ield will be Butch Woolfolk, coming off an impressive rookie season, and Rob Carpenter, an '82 holdout who is looking to regain the form he flashed two years ago in leading the Giants to a playoff berth. Holding out from the Giants this year is All-Pro linebacker Lawrence Taylor, who plans to attend the game in street clothes. Also unavailable will be starting right corner-back Terry Jackson, nursing a thigh injury. "The score of this game won't mean a thing," says Parcells, who was named Giants' coach when Ray Perkins announced he was taking the head coaching job at his alma mater, Alabama.

"The important thing is to be ready for the season opener Sept. 4 (against the Los Angeles Rams)." The Jets come off their most successful season in more than a decade and new coach Joe Walton will try to provide the club with a smooth transition period following the forced retirement of Walt Michaels. Unlike Parcells, Walton has no quarterback problems and starter Richard Todd probably will play no more than two series before yielding to Pat Ryan and then No. 1 draft choice Ken O'Brien of California-Davis. The Jets, who have beaten the Giants in five of the last six exhibition meetings, enter their pre-season opener in poor shape physically and at least four regulars will miss the game with injuries.

Salaam (shoulder), outside linebacker Greg Buttle (bicep) and guard Stan Waldemore (knee) are unavailable. Klecko and NFL rushing leader Freeman McNeil will both be held out for a least the first two exhibition games with knee problems. "We are going to treat it just like another game," says Walton. "We'll increase the playing time of our regulars as we go each week and we'll increase the tempo to be ready for our league opener (at San Diego Sept. 4)." will be running the 10,000 meters instead but, judging from his recent sub-par racing, he would appear to have little chance for a medal.

Ron Tabb, Benji Durden and Ed Men-doza 2-3-4 in the Boston Marathon in April will represent the United States in the marathon. The favorite is Rob De Castella of Australia, unbeaten over the last three years, including an April victory over Salazar, the first time anyone had beaten Salazar in a marathon. De Castella will be challenged by Carlos Lopes of Portugal and by any number of African distance runners who make a habit of shocking the world with their prowess at every major international competition. The closest to an American sure thing in the World Championships is 400-meter hurdler Edwin Moses, 1976 Olympic Gold Medalist, world record holder and undefeated in his specialty since 1977. Evelyn Ashford will face strong East German competition in the sprints but is a definite multi-medal possibility, and Tom Petranoff will attempt to heave the javelin 327 feet, 2 inches as he did in setting a new world record in May.

(Connecticut's foremost track athlete, Jan Merrill of Waterford, a 1976 Olympian and many times a U.S. internationalist, finished 12th in the U.S. trials in June, failing to make the Helsinki team.) Mary Decker's runaway victories, fail to appreciate that she has rarely beaten the Eastern Europeans, who have a virtual lock on Olympic gold medals and world records in the middle-distance events fpr women. Just a month ago Frank Shorter, who will be one of NBC's commentators in Helsinki, hinted that we shouldn't expect too much of Decker. Now evep he admits that she is in the best form of her life she has set new personal records in the 800 meters and 1,500 meters in the past two weeks and has every chance of winning the race, her best distance.

In the "metric mile," the race, American Steve Scott is now rated the favorite. Long this country's top miler, Scott has often labored in the shadows of the likes of Sebastian Coe, Steve Ovett and Eamonn Coghlan. In recent races, however, he has soundly beaten both Coe and Coghlan, neither of whom will run the 1,500 in Helsinki. That leaves Great Britain's Ovett, wily, fast-finishing and the 1980 Olympic champion at 800 meters, as Scott's final obstacle. The U.S.

men's marathon team is missing this country's most recognizable track name, Alberto Salazar. Like Benoit, Salazar opted not to try out for the Helsinki squad in the marathon. He day coverage will consist of same-day, tape-delay broadcasts aired late at night. No athlete can compete in Helsinki without meeting qualifying standards even tougher than those which will apply in Los Angeles next summer. This lias led many observers to declare that, a track and field perspective alone, the World Championships may be more exciting than the Olympics, "The World Championships will be RACE RESULTS 3.60 5.60 Saratoga Quinlela 1-3 24.60 Exacta 1-3 51 90 Trifecta 1-3-7 376.20 Daily Double 4-1 $302.00 THIRD: 1 Chicuri-Roland 6 Bascaran-Barturen Quiniela 1-3 56 40 Perfecta 3-1 101,70 Trifecta 3-1-6 341,70 FOURTH: Directed Star, Clavtn 17.00 8.80 5.10 'EUe CWSs, Migliore 7.40 4.80 Gourmet, Guerra 3 0 12.20 4 Bobbv-Egana 2 Jaime-Garate 6 Cortarena 15.80 980 760 3.00 10.00 3.60 3 80 Scratched All My Stars, Fallen Flower, Full Time Wife, Escapess, Dotterel.
