Lixivium QUESTION: How tin bees make their honey? * * * ANSWER: Honey bees are sociable insects which live and work together in large groups or communities. The worker bees visit flowers and suck a sweet liquid from them. This juice or nectar is found in little containers at the base of flower petals. The worker bee has a long tongue or tube with a tiny hair pad at the end. It uses the tongue to sip up nectar, which it deposits in its honey sac. a kind of stomach. Here the nectar undergoes a series of changes. Then it is brought back to the hive, where it is deposited in the cells of the honeycomb, a structure of wax made by the workers. There, further changes take place. The flavor and color of honey depend on the flowers from which the nectar is derived. Some of the different varieties of flavor in honey are clover, orange blossom, alfalfa, buckwheat, tulip tree, rose, raspberry and many others. 7-27 (David Morin of Kensington, Conn., wins a prize for this question.
