THE MARKETPLACE RESTAURANT The Marketplace at Glen Lochen, 39 New London Turnpike Extension, Glastonbury 633-3832 Hours: Sunday 11 a.m.-1 a.m.; Monday-Thursday 11:30 a.m.-1 a.m.; Friday and Saturday 11:30 a.m.-2 am Happy hour: p.m. everyday. Cover Charge: No Entertainment: Guitarist, pianist, trio or some such performs at night Wednesday through Sunday, playing mild rock, pop, folk or jazz. Drinks: The Marketplace serves alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at the bar and at nearby tables in the upstairs lounge. A full wine menu is available at the downstairs dining room.

Specialty concoctions include the Creamsicle (with ice cream, orange juice, vodka $2.50) and strawberry daiquiris, both of which may be ordered without liquor. A basic mixed drink such as gin and tonic or bourbon and soda is $1.95. Food: A full menu specializing in steaks, rack of lamb and scampi, as well as a monster salad bar, are features of the downstairs dining area, which looks out on the park-like surroundings of Glen Lochen. Upstairs, light appetizer-type foods are available at the bar or small tables until midnight. Typical are nachos potato skins omelets and sandwiches Happy hour features a variety of free hors d'ouevres of the pizzatacochicken wing type.

Service: The lounge can get packed for happy hour, especially on Fridays when it takes a major effort to get any service at all. At peak hours, bartenders and waitresses generally strive to do their best, offering sympathy if not necessarily speedy service. For full dining downstairs, the service is fine. Atmosphere: Despite what newcomers might be told, Glastonbury isn't nearly as preppy as, say, West Hartford or Farmington, but the Marketplace comes close. Being well-dressed is a must, although doesn't mean casual wear is inappropriate.

On Fridays, this is one of the most popular east-of-the-river spots, with the huge crowd apparently made up of Marketplace regulars. On warm evenings, it's nice to go outside and sip drinks on the balcony at the west end of the lounge. The restaurant is at the far northeast end of the Glen Lochen mall, a 10-year-old modernistic construction of wood, glass and exposed metal just north of Glastonbury center.
