Venezuela a Big Backer Of Junta in El Salvador L.A. Times Service CARACAS, Venezuela Spurred by a democratic ideology and concern over spreading Cuban influence, Venezuela has moved into the vanguard of opposition to leftist revolutionary movements in Central America and the Caribbean.

The immediate focus of Venezuela's increasing regional activism is El Salvador, where the government of President Jose Napoleon Duarte is being besieged by a leftist rebellion on one side and hard-line rightists on the other. There is growing evidence of direct Cuban support for the leftist side. Although Venezuelan President Luis Herrera Campins will not disclose amounts, he reportedly has poured hundreds of millions of dollars into El Salvador to help Duarte and his junta maintain control. In addition, there have been reports of direct Venezuelan military aid to the Salvadoran government, reports strongly denied by Herrera's spokesmen. But whatever the form of the aid and in whatever amount, Herrera is clearly Brookfield Resident Charged in Slaying BROOKFIELD A 19-year-old Brookfield man was charged Monday in the stabbing death Monday night of the man who managed the Brookfield Kennels and a nearby apartment complex.

Arne Johnson of 523 Federal Road was charged with murder and was being held in Danbury jail after the stabbing of Alan Bono, 40, of 519 Federal Road about 6:40 p.m. Police said the stabbing occurred on the front lawn of the kennel after an argument between the two men. They said Bono was stabbed several times in the chest and stomach. He was taken to Danbury Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. Bono was the manager of the apartment building in which Johnson lives, they said.

Police said witnesses gave them a description of Johnson, who allegedly fled the scene after the stabbing. Police arrested him about 7:30 p.m. several miles from the kennel. A $125,000 bond was set on Johnson. He is to appear today in Danbury Superior Court.
