The first represents an old order that is slowly changing; the second, more pointedly, incarnates an arriving new class that challenges the narrow beliefs of his Cambridge masters. Liddell is an amateur who feels that his abilities as an athlete are not only God-given, but designed for a purpose. Abrahams trains himself like a professional, using science and technique to its fullest, prefiguring the perfection of athletic endeavor that is only now fully taking hold.

That both men win their own way is an indication of the non-dogmatic nature of the collaboration between Hudson and Welland, whose final point hangs only on Abrahams' sense that he is at last accepted, even lionized by a nation in which he has long felt a stranger. This feeling is not trumpeted, however. There is only a quiet, understated suggestion that the Jewish athlete has finally won a secure place for himself, and that there is no longer a need for desperate competition. And by implication, his arrival carries with it a sense of the opening up of British society, of its acceptance of new people, new ideas. Host ll Lackman If We Must Be Doing Something Right! SAT. SW. If plus 1 Boiled Twin Lobster4 14 1 Single Boiled Lobster The Trinity College Department of Music presents PLUM "Chariots of Fire," director Hugh Hudson's rich and resonant recreation of a small but important British victory in the years between the wars, is itself a triumph, a return to the best days of the British cinema. It is a film that glorifies a lost England, while also criticizing, even subtly mocking, its very insularity. It is also a film that makes competitive running seem one of -the most noble efforts of mankind, albeit an almost lunatic compulsion.

But most of all, it is a deeply etched portrait of two young men, a passionate Christian and a combative Jew who are first rivals, finally teammates. And through this, it becomes a study of the outsider and an understated reflection on the roots of the anti-Semitism that was to culminate in the Holocaust. Based on the lives of two Olympic winners in 1924, Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams, "Chariots of Fire" is implicitly a regretful reverie on England's days of idealism and honor. (Its title is drawn from a William Blake poem that includes a pledge to fight onward "Till we have built JerusalemIn England's green and pleasant After opening in the recent past with a service that looks back to the glories of the Olympic winners, the film cuts back to the training of the team in Kent before it begins tracing the steps of Liddell and Abrahams in their races to immortality. Determining exactly where we are is therefore somewhat difficult at the The screenplay by Colin Welland offers us a narrator who is close to Abrahams but who has little connection to Liddell.

As a result, during that portion of the film in which their stories develop separately before the men at last meet on the cinder often get the feeling that Liddell's sense of himself as God's runner is peripheral to the considerably more involving examination of Abraham's fiercely driven desire to prove that he is a better man than all the darling preps at Cambridge. This, of course, is also in large measure due to the sheer intensity of Ben Cross' characterization of Abrahams. Although takes a while to sort out the lordlings around Abrahams and the lairds around the Scot Liddell, once "Chariots of Fire" hits its stride the film develops coherently and persuasively. Working with the masterful David Watkin as his director of photography, Hudson proves a director whose extraordinary visual power is primarily manifested in his attention to detail. Whatever his camera focuses on, it captures a sense of that particular, time and place whether it is a day of games in the green Highlands or the hubbub of recruitment of new men for Cambridge's undergraduate societies.

This early scene at Cambridge (reminiscent of the Harvard sequences in "Heaven's Gate," Michael Cimino's landmark exercise in overspending) is one example of Hudson's ability to work on a large canvas without making extraordinary outlays of money. "Chariots of Fire" cost an amazingly low $5.5 million (a fraction of the $36 million or so that Cimino sank into his Western). Yet there is not a moment of Hudson's film that betrays even a touch of corner-cutting. Here unquestionably is a lesson in the judicious use of actual locations together with such invaluable props as a brass adorned steam engine and a varnished wood touring car. The moments of visual beauty including its lyrical slow motion shots of the joys of running that fill "Chariots of Fire" are only its method, however, not its meaning.

Regular Menu Available Bradley International Airport Windsor Locks liiiilijjtli ill Jl mm PERSON Feb 2P.M. rhilHnn'c RONALD ii a i Wilf aDDear 1 Ttnv for FIIXT REVIEW This perception is conveyed with restraint and subtlety through the final moments of Cross' consummately realized characterization of Harold Abrahams, a fascinating young man who attacks everything he does with the same taut confidence that he exhibits when he takes on and breaks a 700-year-old university legend. Lean and hawk-faced, inwardly focused and yet theatrical, Cross makes Abrahams both painfully aggressive and wholly admirable, likable even at his most difficult moments. It is a performance that contains all the hurt suffered by the alien in a homogeneous society, together with the will to overcome.

There is also first-class acting by the young players who take on the identities of the Abrahams' contemporaries. Ian Charleston makes Liddell ruggedly spiritual, attractive and oddly analogous to Abrahams in his refusal to compromise his personal principles. Seldom has a man of God been so charismatically represented. Nigel Havers brings charm and aristocratic style to Lord Andrew Lindsay, a champion hurdler with an affinity for cigarettes and champagne, and Nicholas Farrell projects a nice sense of friendship as Abrahams' roommate and fellow athlete Aubrey Montague. As for the women in the lives of the runner, Alice Krige embodies all the glamour and mysterious allure of an actress of the period who wins Abrahams' heart, and Cheryl Campbell is sweetly countrified as Eric's devoted sister Jennie.

Sir John Gielgud and director Lindsay Anderson are properly stuffy and stodgy as a pair of Cambridge masters, and Dennis Christopher and Brad Davis make strong contributions as two Americans who are billed as the fastest humans alive until 1924, that is. Ian Holm also contributes a strong characterization as Abrahams' trainer Sam Mussa-bini, although both his makeup and his accent are laid on a bit thick. Rated PG, this film contains nothing that is offensive in any way, and is a fine film for young people. Those who are into running will find it especially thrilling.
