D10 THE HARTFORD COURANT: Sunday, Splmbw 13, 1981 mm- My -iMninu i st uns Leopards Zig Central WitS Aerial Show! Wo.lM ichigan By MIKE O'BRIEN Associated Press A MADISON, Wis. The critics said Wisconsin's offense was too plodding and unimaginative for the Badgers to have a chance against top-ranked Michigan Saturday, but sophomore quarterback Jess Cole proved them "We knew all along we had a good team. Our offense did a tremendous job, and all the guys played a really Jihysical game," said Cole, who passed or touchdowns on plays covering 17 yards to Marvin Neal and 71 to John Williams as Wisconsin upset Michigan 21-14 in Big 10 college football. Coach Dave McClain opened up the Wisconsin offense, frequently using a shotgun Cole passed for 182 yards and added another 41 on option runs as the Badgers rolled up 439 yards against a defense that had al- 1 7 1 lowed no touchdowns and only three field goals in Michigan's final 5 Vz games last season. "A lot of people didn't think we could beat the No.

1 team in the country," McClain said, "But before the game I told the players that they were the only guys in this (locker) room who believed we could win. You've got to believe. "They've said we were too conservative, but in my first few years here we just didn't have the players," he said. "If we made one mistake then, it was six points. "What we wanted mainly to do was keep Michigan deep in its territory," he said.

"If they were going to score, we wanted them to go 80 or 90 yards." Williams, a tailback, caught a Cole screen pass about five yards behind the line of scrimmage and raced down the left sideline to score on a 71-yard play, giving Wisconsin a 21-14 lead with 5:13 left in the third quarter. The Badgers, beaten by a combined margin of 176-0 in the teams' last four games, held on to defeat the Wolverines for the first time in 15 meetings since 1962. It was Michigan's first defeat in a season opener in Bo Schem-bechler's 13 seasons as coach at the school. "I knew this would be a good team," Schembechler said. "Qbviously, they're a better team than anybody thought they were.

Obviously, we're not as gqpd as everybody thought we were. "Our problems were simple," he said. "Our offense wasn't very good. Our defense wasn't very good. Our kicking game wasn't any good.

And the coaching was poor. When you have those four things going against you and you only get beat by seven points, it's a miracle. Wisconsin safety Matt Vanden Boom helped preserve the vfctory by intercepting three Steve Smith passes. The third interception gave the Badgers possession at their 17 withvtwo seconds to play.
