It was a modern fairy story, with all that implies, plus occasional pauses for song — sweet, romantic and poignant songs, too. But it was the idea, based on a short story, and its execution that were impressive. A disillusioned young poet, played by Anthony Perkins, a1 tempted to retreat from th harsh world by hiding in a department store by day. Then, instead of having the whole store to himself by night, he finds it is inhabited by a group of elderly people, including one grand old lady who has been there since the Taft administration. All these night people are villains who ruthlessly call in the fearsome "dark men" when anyone wants out of their strange world. The dark men are also night creatures who live in a nearby undertaking establishment. The heroine, a pretty appealing girl named (ISiarmian Carr, played the maid of the oldest of the night people, and had been a slave and unwilling prisoner for 13 years. It seems that when she was six, she wandered away from her mother who was trying on hats, and found herself in the hands of the right people who would never let her go. Bob Hope, in the topical monologue that opened his NBC comedy show Wednesday night, was the victim of the convenient practice of pretaping programs. Although most of his wisecracks concerned California politics, his windup consisted of some jokes about the President's sur- geiy— and he referred to it as if it would take place in the future, instead of some hours before the program went on the 1 A/VoNTGOMERY WARD w«ns... ^ipKi 2 DAYS ONLY m^e '20 Oil stereo phono 1 PORTABII DESIGN- SOLID STATI CHASSIS 79 Reg. 99.95 6-lnch woofer and 4-inch tweeter^ in each wing for vibrant sound Full/ transistorized for instant p\ay, cool operation, long life Separate bass, treble and balance controls for tone adjustment Speaker wings separate up to 20 feet for best stereo separation Smart brown and white luggage* style COM with silver-color trim Siraffe walker has chair-back support! 4^^ Playskool's cute giraffe encourages child to walk.
