Redlands Daily Facfs Wed., May 19. 1965 - 1 1 COAST NEAR CARMEL — Some of the most scenic coastiand in California is the region around Cormel and the famous 17-mile drive that starts at Pebble Beach and continues to Monterey. Features are the exotic Monterey Cypress frees that grow in weird shapes on the windswept coast. Point lobos and its beautiful state park are another attraction. Have a hearty worked hard during the year'breakfast, skip or have a light owes herself a good vacation, j 'unch and look for a companion One way to siphon off day-today pleasure on a trip, especial-i ly when in another country, is to tie plans in knots with false budgeting. This view by a New Yorker with a piquant approach to travel is outlined in a new book, "Follow Me." In it the author, Jean Baer, draws on her experiences of 16 trips alone to all parts of the world. In her book and during a relaxed chat in her Manhattan apartment decorated with mementoes of "singular" excursions. Miss Baer makes these points: Don't waste money on food abroad. "You wouldn't dine to buy you dinner." Allow S20 to $25 a day. Stay in the better hotels in a large city to meet the type of people you would enjoy. Spend less in smaller towns. Don't include clothes or furniture bought in another country as part of your travel budget. "Wouldn't you buy a suit, coat books, possibly china, during the year at home? Save that money and buy them on your trip," she says. Avoid tours planned by U.S. travel agents. "They all hate me," she laughed, "but for the woman alone it is best to arrange for your own travel ticket and perhaps one night at a hotel. Then let the concierge help you plan your tours. Join with others and route your own sightseeing. It's cheaper and more fun." Scout major stores in foreign cities to learn the prices of anything you plan to buy. Then you can shop the sidestreet boutiques, knowing what prices are in the area. In flea markets, start at half the price named. You will go up and the merchant comes down. Always haggle. Shop sales. Ship home old clothes (clothes worn during the trip) and carry home as much as you can in the way of dishes, accessories or a roll of wall-paper, as she did. Send your bags home with an I.O.U. to the airline for overweight. Miss Baer also makes a very strong point of seeking off-beat resort areas where the rates are cheap and the people interesting. "Consider," she said strongly, "going to a winter resort area if your home is near the beach. If you want to meet people, avoid off-season months such as July and August in Par is when most leave town. Tell your friends and acquaintances where yoa are gong. They'll probably write a letter to someone." "Whatever you do," she further advised, "dress well. Look terrific and aim up and not down in your approach to reservations and places you want to go. "I never had a truly bad experience with any m.an I met traveling alone," she revealed, "but don't expect miracles. You travel with your own personal- tiy." As proposed by President Johnson, it's the first of its kind in California. Called Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity, it was named after three large manmade lakes which attract thousands of people annually. The area is about 125 miles south of the Oregon border, but first-time visitors are in for surprises. Altitudes of the lakes, for example, range only from 1,065 feet to about 2,400 feet, and they never freeze. G^graphers classify them as being in the Pacific Northwest, but to get to them you drive through streets lined with palm trees. And water on Shasta lake is warmer in summer than the ocean off Los Angeles. The three lakes offer a wide variety of resorts along with camping accessible in some places by water only.
