Redlands Daily Facts Wed., May 19, 1965 - 5 BEAUTIFUL CALIFORNIA - Mt. Shasta, one of California's most dramtic peaks, is reflected in the millpond at lumber mill in McCioud. Motorists thrill to Mt. Shasta which is visible for many miles. (Union Pacific Railroad photo) Redwood Empire now set for a flood — of tourists EUREKA, Calif. (UPI) — It rained as though it would never stop. When it finally did, floods had killed 28 persons in Humbolt and Del Norte counties alone, the towns of Peppenvood and Weott had been smashed to kindling and scores of businesses and homes in California's Redwood Empire had been destroyed or damaged. But economically, the worst blow was to highways, bridges and roads in Northern California and Southern Oregon. Most of them were severely damaged. The damage hampered the timber industry. Most of all, it kept out the tourists. Thousands of visitors ply the highways and roads of the Redwood country every year and bring money with them. Lots of it. The floods were last December. Now the home of the world's tallest trees is getting ready for what may be its best tourist season yet. The damage to roads and bridges alone was estimated at $110 million. Almost as soon as the swollen rivers and streams receded the state and federal governments poured millions of dollars into the coastal counties for repairs. Good weather followed the bad and that helped reconstruc tion. Almost all roads are back in operation. There is one 10-mile detour near Rio Dell in Humboldt county, but it's paved. There are three one-way temporary bridges, but two of them have traffic lights. Most parks and camp grounds are open. Businessmen and merchants chipped in on a $50,000 fund raised by the nine-county Redwood Empire Association to advertise that "the Redwood Empire wasn't washed out to sea." Check Your Car For a safer and more pleasant vacation trip this summer, the Automobile Club of Southern California suggests that you have your car in good mechanical condition. Among other things, make sure that all of your lights are working properly: directional signals, headlights (low and high beam), taillights, both stoplights and license plate light. Safety Warning If your brakes appear to fail while you are driving on your vacation, pump the foot brake, shift into lower gear and use your hand brake if necessary.
