Dan Quinn Kevin Cawley Kathie Burg Marvin Wendl Margie Montgomery A Christmas Carol 9 Cast Announced Charles Dickens' "Christmas Carol" will be presented Friday, December 18, by the Kuemper Drama Department. Fr. F. E. Higgins will be the director of the production with Jay Sdhrad as student director and Mary Gaffney as assistant director. The traditional Christmas play is the story of an old sel fish egotistical man named Scrooge who learns the true meaning of Christmas by the visit of M a r le y's Ghost, Scrooge's dead partner who was also a selfish scoundrel in his lifetime and who is suffering now in his death. Three ghosts also visit him. The ghost of Christmas past shows Scrooge as a boy and how he started getting to be the mean old man he is today. The ghost of Christmas present reveals to Scrooge his employee's family, the Bob Cratchits, and how happy they all are just being together even though they are very poor and don't even have enough money to pay for Tiny Tim's medical bills. The ghost of Christmas future shows Scrooge what it will be like after he is dead, no one will grieve over his death and his servants even loot his belongings! This shakes Scrooge up and he has a complete change of heart as he proves to the Cratohit family. Begins in Frosh for Use at Student Mass Algebrtt classes There are many Kuemper students who work hard to improve various aspects of their school. One such group is the banner committee, headed by Joan Schulte. Committee members are Nancy Anthofer, Gail Friedman, Jane Mosher, Debbie Schenkelberg, Carol Sibenal- ler, and Mary Testroet. The committee is a part of the Liturgy Team, which is supervised by Fr. Seuntjens. These students meet several times a week to make the banners which are used during Mass. Joan Schulte said, "I think that the banners make Mass more meaningful to the students, and also brighten up the chapeltorium." She explained that there is some discussion as to which slogans and symbols are appropriate before the actual construction begins. The committee finds out what the intention of the Mass is, and tries to relate the message of tlie banner to it. Although they use a pamphlet for ideas, the designs and slogans are original. Materials for the banners, such as felt and burlap, are furnished by Fr. Seuntjens. Some of the slogans are derived from popular songs. One of these is near the library, and reads "We've only just begun." Near the door of the Kuemper chapel is a banner with the words "Open and you shall find." These banners are for the benefit of the students and faculty. —Charger Photo MEMBERS OF the banner committee are busy sharing and building new ideas in preparation for Fri- riav Masses. . The Kuemper freshmen will start something new — individual study in Algebra. There will be a group consisting of 32 students participating in this program under the supervision of Sr. Barbara Ann Hausman, Sr. Bette Shakal, and Sr. Francis Xavier. "The purpose of this program," Sr. Barbara Ann explained, "is twofold. First, to assume the basic responsibility for learning. Second, to adapt learning to the individual's abilities and rate of learning so that more of his potential will be used." The method that will be used includes: 1. one formal class a week will be conducted — a lecture class, 2. a contract will be made with the student for the amount of work to be done and checked, 3. the student will write a pre-tesl before taking the test of the unit in order to evaluate the sudent's readiness in mastering the subject matter. AH the students will report to their regular classroom, but lab work will be going on constantly. When the student completes the work and the test for the unit, he will be excused from the class until a new contract is made with the student. This first group will be tested against a control group to prove its usefulness and help to the students and teachers. If the program proves worthwhile, it will be continued in the future. -~Ctl.il I'lmt'i PRE-SCHOOLERS enjoy cutting, pasting, and other fun filled activities during the Tuesday morning Nursery School session. Family Living Classes Conduct a Nursery School The Family Living classes, in connection with the study of Child Care, are conducting a Nursery School this quarter. Each Tuesday, from Mod 1-9. eleven pre-schoolers ranging from age three to five, are introduced to pre-sehool activities and social encounters. The eleven children enrolled are: Stephanie Balk, David Donelly. Carolyn Kelley, Chuck and Patricia Knoblauch, D e n i s e Over- mohle, Kristie Sanders, Jeff Sanders, Dori T h i el e n. John Van Hecke, and John Wagner. The activities which are chosen by the senior girls vary each session. Some of these activities consist of coloring pictures, working with play-dough, participating in games such as Animal Twister. London Bridge, Simon Says, cutouts, musical chairs, storybooks, and actiwty records.
