Among the guests will be: former heavyweight champion Muhammad Alt, comedian Bill Cosby, singers Lola Falana, Glen Campbell, Charley Pride, Paul Williams, the Mills Brothers and baseball's all-time great base stealer Lou Brock. Half of the students enrolled at UNCF colleges come from families earning less than $9,000 annually. Ninety percent require financial aid. Many of the UNCF colleges are over a century old. Their modern curricula prepare students for careers in medicine, business, law, communications, economics, physics and other fields. The UNCF is perhaps best known by its motto: "A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Waste." "The Lou Rawls Parade of Stars" will be broadcast on WTNH-TV Channel 8 on Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m.

Children Can Catch Summer Video Habit By RON ALRIDGE Summer is here, which means youngsters will be spending more time with the tube than they usually do. Television is always the Great American Babysitter, but it's doubly so when school's out and children are home during the day. Also, bedtimes come later, so evening viewing hours are extended. In summer months, parents who normally keep a Eretty close watch on their children's TV-watching abits drop their guards. They reason that with no homework in need of attention, the tube can't do all that much damage.

What too many people fail to understand is that television is no toy. It's a potent force that needs to be regulated year round. A story from my own family illustrates the point. My brother, Bob, is a dedicated father. He reads a lot, takes parenting seriously, really stays tuned into what his three sons are doing.

But, perhaps because at 47 he's not really part of the TV generation, Bob tends to be casual about how his kids use the tube. My own brother! Egad! A few years ago, his oldest son, Bobby, became something of a TV addict. He had fallen into that all-too-common pattern of coming home from school, flipping on the TV set and bombarding his face with flickering images, hour after hour, day after day. It didn't take long for the consequences to show up. His robust color faded, his trim athletic build vanished, he became sluggish.

His body simply wasn't getting enough exercise. Neither was his mind, but the effects of that weren't visible. Being bright, and probably a little prodded by his dad, Bobby recovered. He used the summer months to dive into outside activities, including competitive swimming. Soon, he was his old energetic self again.

Bobby's not unusual. Television is addictive, an electronic drug of sorts. It needs to be controlled by more than a mere channel selection or on-of switch. Now, with the summer still in its early days, is the time to keep your child from falling into the TV-watching rut. Break the habit before it begins.

Your child will have a healthier, more stimulating summer. In our house, we generally avoid rigid TV-watching rules. Like parents everywhere, Dorothy and I have found that setting forth a series of stern "don'ts" often whets a child's appetite for the forbid- den fruit. We prefer to give television some competition. There are a lot of things kids would rather do than watch TV.

It's just a matter of getting them started. We try to have materials available that our children can use creatively, things that encourage active participation rather than passive staring and listening. We generally have a supply of books and crayons, toys and baseballs. Shelby, 10, has a strange desire to do housework. Dorothy, who'd rather fight a rabid bulldog than sweep and mop, gleefully encourages her.

Spencer, 13, inherited a mechanical aptitude from his grandfather so we keep quiet when he drags old bicycles into the yard for repair. We also keep fairly quiet when 8-year-old Scott romps in covered with mud after a day of catching creatures in the creek. But our kids are normal and there have been times when they've fallen into the TV-watching rut At those times, we've become only slightly authoritarian, decreeing that a certain hour or two of each day be devoted to outdoor activity. We've found that once the kids find an activity, they usually forget about the tube until dark. Like I said, kids would rather be active.

WINDSOR VERNON Clm -2S! hi ml Jm i Mt THINGS dose of TV, give him the opportunity to do something else.

If necessary, give him a little nudge by setting aside a certain time for active play. Faced with such competition, the tube's bound to lose. Before we all plunge into a television-free summer, we need to remember that some of the tube's offerings are worth watching. For- example, teenagers might want to watch some of the political conventions in action. With a little backgrounding by their parents, the kids could learn something about the political process.

And, of course, viewers of all ages have favorite TV show3 they don't want to miss. Nothing wrong with that What's to be avoided at all costs is watching television as opposed to television shows. Programs should be selected and tuned in for a reason, not simply because they are there. Here's to a great summer for you and your children. 'sARfi 413 Norm Wain St.
