The Dogs got their first touchdown in a pretty routine fashion, a 7-play touchdown drive that began at the Smyrna 40 after the kickoff. The seventh play in the drive was a 28-yard sweep to the right by Junior Larry Murray who needed an extra effort during the last five yards when be had two Lewisburg Tigers hanging on to his jersey. Donald Beane had scarcely completed the point-after conversion and lofted a kickoff to the Lewisburg 5-yard marker when the visiting Marshall countians were back in the football game. Taking advantage of a breakdown in the Smyrna kick coverage, lightning like Ricky Biggers picked the Beane kickoff up at the five-yard line and squirted 95 yards for a touchdown. The con-' version try failed and Smyrna led 7-6 with 8:24 left in the first period.

The hitting was still tough from both sides even though the Bulldogs were able to collect another seven points with 5:14 left in the second period when Robert Pope just made it across the goal line 1' -J ft POP! DIVES OR YARDAGE Tanklike fullback Robert Pope, going for thai extra inch, was one of many Bulldogs that sparkled for Smyrna. from nine yards out. With the 14-6 advantage and new life, thanks to a super defensive effort by Jesse Clark on the following kickoff, the entire Smyrna team just seemed to be exploding with enthusiasm as they clearly envisioned improving their record from a mediocre 2-3 and a respectable 3-3. The Tigers were back on their 4-yard line because of Clark's super tackle. With Gil Gilley, Bruce Moore, Clyde Hereford and James Dunaway joining in the charges, Lewisburg found itself punting from deep in the Tiger end zone.

Moore helped break down the protection to where the Tiger -couldn't get off a punt while Moore and Hereford got to him for a safety and Smyrna led 16-6 with 3:22 left to play. And rubbing salt in the wound, the Bulldogs added another score before the half ended as Larry Sharpe scooted eleven yards just before the half ended. When Lewisburg tried to fight back in the second half, they found their quarterback Gus Mayer in plenty of trouble. The Tiger protection could in no way hold off the Bulldog charges and the QB was sacked no less than eight times, maybe more. The Dogs blew a scoring opportunity in the third period when Sharpe intercepted a pass at the Lewisburg 37.

The Dogs fumbled the ball back on the next play. But charges by Moore and Gil-ley demoralized the Tigers and very soon the Dogs were on their way to another score after the punter fumbled the snap and Smyrna took over at the Tiger 17-yard line. Couple of plays later Murray went over from six yards out, Beane converted for the fourth straight time and Smyrna had it wrapped up. Hereford blocked a Lewisburg punt at the Tiger 48, but Coach Holland apparently wanted to give the reserves some work. He loaded the lineup with youngsters and the game ended with Lewisburg penetrating to the Dog 14-yard line.

Smyrna, with a 3-3 record and new life, has its toughest challenge yet when the Dogs host Hartsville next Friday. SCORING Smyrna: Murray, 28-yard run, Beane kick. Lewisburg: Biggers 95-yard kickoff return. Kick failed. Smyrna: Pope 9-yard run, Beane kicked.

Richmond dropped to 3-2 for the season.

MUNCIE, Ind. (UPI) -Reserve quarterback Rick Scott came off the bench and proceeded to set a school passing record in leading Ball State to a 38-23 victory over Richmond Saturday. Scott threw five touchdown passes the most ever in a single game for a Cardinal after starting quarterback Art Yaroch suffered a collarbone injury on the third play from scrimmage. All Scott's only pass completions were for touchdowns because Ball State stayed mostly on the ground, piling up 344 yards rushing to 106 for the Spiders. Ball State held only a 7-3 halftime lead and a 21-17 spread after three, but exploded for 17 points in the final period.
