^wo Summer Beauty Hjfc: IJow to Control %ur IJair... i\nd Y\gw to Control Your ^an! By Rasalya Aarevaya Ask women what plagues ihem the most during J- the scorching summer season and the majority of them will agree that it's keeping their skin from being overexposed to the sun and maintaining stylish- looking hair, especially during strenuous outdoor activities. HOW TO HANDLE YOUR HAIR Did you know that, on the average, woman between the ages of 14 and 40 spend 190 hours a year on their hair? If you want to cut down on that figure, get your hair trimmed frequently in a style you can manage; keep it covered when sunbathing; get a body permanent if your hair is dead-straight. To give you some ideas, Michael Gottfried has created two easy-to-carc-for styles for the medium-length hairdo illustrated here. . In the first photo, the hair is waved softly against one cheek, caught up with an invisible comb, then swept behind one car in an update of the thirties'. Matching "stained glass" laminated barrettes are placed next to one another for a neat, eye-catching look. If you opt for the second quick-change style, you'll look great in action with your hair pulled smoothly back into a sophisticated ponytail that loops into a pageboy. To hold the ponytail in place and add bright color accents, we used an extra-large faceted, twin- bead ponytail holder in crystal-clear "icy" colors. HOW TO HANDLE THE SUN To avoid sunburn, be forearmed with these helpful tips: 1. You can get a tan on a cloudy day-and sometimes a bad burn -even though you can't sec the sun. It's the ultraviolet rays that cause tanning and burning. 2. The sun's rays arc most powerful near noon. So if you're just starting on your tan after a long winter indoors, begin before 11 a.m. or after 2 p.m. 3. Always use "sun-screen" lotions or creams. They speed the tanning process while helping to prevent sunburn. (Baby oil or cocoa butter alone is not sufficient protection.) Fair- skinned people should use "block-out" lotions or creams for maximum protection. 4. Boaters and men who are exposed to the sun and wind a lot will And that if they use a moisturizer frequently, it will make shaving easier because their skin won't dry out as it does when no protection is used. Many physicians have noted that prolonged exposure to sun can result in skin cancers. 5. If you tan one day and bum the next, it may not be the fault of the sun. Suntanning is a chemical process, and the chemicals that we're all exposed to may increase our susceptibility to burn. It may be that a trace of the soap you use remains on the skin's surface or you may have an allergy. Sunburn also may be the result of medicine you've taken — medicine that may react chemically with the sun's rays. Check with your physician if you take medication regularly. 6. The deeper your tan, the more important it is for you to use a moisturizer. Tunning causes the skin's outermost layer, the keratin (which is the skin's defense mechanism against the sun), to thicken and lose its natural moisture. To make up for this loss, you might try an all-purpose moisturizer such as Vaseline Intensive Care lotion. 7. If you get a really bad sunburn—with skin blisters, pain, headache and faintness — you probably have a second-degree burn and should sec a physician. A tepid or cool bath will provide temporary relief. 0. Don't think you have sunburn protection if you've used a product that tans you indoors or overnight. Such products merely color the outer layer of skin. You will look great, but the skin's natural pigment hasn't been stimulated, and the pretty color is no protection against sunburn. You can use the product, but before a suntanning session, apply >jpj sun-tan lotion. bUl Hair accessorial by Goody PuN your hair IntoaaophisticataKl ponytail wtwnMmgotJc outdoor sports arson your 14 • FAMILY WEEKLY, June 30,1974
