THE HARTFORD COURANT: Monday. April 19. 1976 28 Why Johnny Can't Add Expert Faults Old and New Math" ifekyl i mathematics. And the greatest math martyrs were those recent high school graduates who were subjected to the "new math" which made its debut in 1958. Speaking at the annual gathering of the Southern New England Mathematics Association held at Miss Porter's School in Farming-ton recently, Dr.

Morris Kline found fault with all the traditional reasons for learning mathematics. He said, "The doctrine which asserts that mathematics teaches students how By MERRIBEL LEVIS Did you ever use the quadratic formula or Pythagorean theorem in your daily life? Probably not. But if you had been taught pragmatic applications of these equations, you might have understood high school math more and you might be better adapted to deal with everyday life. According to an eminent mathematician, with a humanist's point of view, anyone who went to school after 1900 suffered unnecessarily through the tedium of pure to think is completely unfounded. Deductive reasoning won't solve the world's most pressing problems such as how to vote or whom to marry.

"The argument that math is beautiful is ridiculous. What is beautiful about factoring or geometry?" he said, causing a ripple of laughter throughout the audience of about 125 secondary school math teachers. Dr. Kline, who has taught at several universities since receiving his Ph.D in 1936, also said there is no reason to scare high school students into learning math for college requirements. "I don't think there's a university in the country which University Center Sets REAL ESTATE COURSE Section 6 Weeks Tues.

That is its one great value." He urged teachers to emphasize" "evidence" rather than "proofs." "A student may hand back your proofs on an exam while remaining thoroughly unconvinced," said Kline, who is currently a Visiting Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at Brooklyn College.

"Historically, a mathematician's function is to unearth God's design to test theorems against reality," the math professor said. "It is important to illustrate the power of abstraction. When teaching tangents, show an eclipse of the sun or moon, or even the paintings of the great masters like da Vinci or Raphael," said Kline who, has authored 12 books. (His most recent one is entitled, "Why Johnny Can't Add: The Failure of the New Mathematics.) For problems of geometry, Kline told teachers to explain how the circumference of the earth was calculated 2500 years ago by a Greek mathematician.
