tMm "THE TAKING OFCHRISJINr By MALCOLM L. JOHNSON Sitting numbly through "The Legacy," one wonders how long it will be before it dawns on producers that pictures about the devil and dark old houses have now reached the point of total bankruptcy and ought to be laid to rest. This new film starring the unfortunate Katharine Ross and Sam Elliott as a pair of amorous architects trapped in a baronial mansion will probably do little to extend the overworked genre. There are a couple of of jumpy moments, but even a haunted house picture needs more logic than this one possesses. Just when it seems that such films have come to the end of the line, however, there is nil ill! vl i vJi; iLrflJ CINE II AMITYVILLE HORROR 7:00 PM 9:10 PM tun.

11 Omm Highway W.nWwM'Sie.OfrS There are also echoes of such lesser known films as "Burnt Offerings," in which our young couple is threatened by the evil spirit who presides over the upper reaches of the house, although nearly dead. And there is a head housekeeper sort, right out of "Rebecca," who mysteriously turns Into a white cat, more or less in the the way Dracula becomes a bat. And, to top it off, there is the portrait of an Elizabethan witch, who is a dead ringer for you know who. That "The Legacy" lacks originality is hardly what makes it such a feckless exercise in horror filmmaking, however. Rather, the undoing of this visually elegant, but utterly uninvolving film, lies in the loose ends that adorn virtually every scene.

The film begins unpromis-ingly with a feeble piece of exposition in which eager Maggie Walsh (Katharine Ross) and skeptical Pete Danner (Sam Elliott) receive a mysterious invitation to do a bit of designing in England. A (50,000 retainer is enclosed, so Maggie argues 'why indeed? Ap- Earently she wins the day, ecause suddenly we are dumped into the midst of a montage, showing our cute young couple doing fun, romantic things all over London. Then abruptly they are seen scooting about on a Triumph motorcycle, an unnec-cessarily grueling means of transport in a nation cursed with narrow, serpentine country roads and blessed by first-class rail travel. "The Amityville Horror" had a best-selling hoax going for it which is largely responsible for its' success. "The Legacy" has only a patchwork of ideas from older and better works as concocted by Jimmy San-ster, and strung together into a semblance of a screenplay by him, Paul Tilley and Paul Wheeler. The most obvious of the sources is Agatha Christie's "Ten Little Indians;" once again, a collection of vaguely evil upper-class itiimll If you like shrimp, you're gonna love my place, Beefsteak Charlie's.

Such is the start of all their terrors, and is also the beginning of the film's train of incredible coincidences.

How, one might ask, did that Rolls happen to be on the same road at the same time wiih-the Triumph? Then, a few moments later, we are wondering just how the faucet' in Peter Danner's shower turns uselessly one minute, only to work perfectly the next? Or subsequently, now a sheet of glass is dropped over the Greco-Roman indoor pool where a brilliant swimmer meets her death only to a vanish the next moment Or why Peter and Maggie, having escaped, can't find a road that doesn't lead back to the manor house? 4 One supposes, it's all the devil's work although there seems to be a perfectly human murderer loose in the house, who is apparently doing the dirty work. Or Is it that white cat? "The Legacy" is constructed so clumsily that it's really difficult to care. There are a few vaguely arresting performances, especially those of Margaret Ty-zack, who makes her Nurse Adams a Judith Anderson variation with nicely strained malevolence, and of The Who's Roger Daltry, who brings lively cheekiness to his playing of Clive, the working class music mag- nate. Elliott also manages to make Pete almost convincing, though he has gone too hlnw-dried and thicklv-mus- It WESTFARMS 561-0153 fcUNCHEStfHPARKAOE 649-MSJ (i.t, no MM'MI m.ci St JO ler SHOWS STAITII6 I si jo mo shows stmt IIIOII 2M 1 WEDNESDAY NIGHT ONLY ALAN ALDA DOUBLE FEATURE 7 BARBARA HARRIS' "KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE" SPECIAL 1HOWTIMIS INMAHTPOaO rtClaama Bangkok Ceanactlon 4:08, Lova Crulw 1:40, I.
