Suffolk Downs By GINNY APPLE MIDDLETOWN Scott Wolfe and Dae Song of Hall High School marched into the quarterfinals of the CIAC Boys State Open Tennis tournament Friday afternoon by ousting Central Connecticut Interscholas-tic League foes Steve Godiksen and Peter Arciero of Simsbury at the Wesleyan University courts. Wolfe, the fifth seed, knocked off Godiksen, 6-4, 6-1, in the third round of singles action while Song outlasted Arciero, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5-4).

It was the first time in his high school career that Wolfe had beaten Godiksen. The double wins were sweet victory for Hall, which lost the CCIL crown to Simsbury this year when the Indians won a tight 4-3 match in West Wolfe, a junior, was runnerup in last week's Class LL final, losing a tough, down-to-the-wire match to John McLean; of Westhill, 7-6 (5-4), 7-6 (5-3). Top-seeded McLean also advanced to today's 9 a.m. quarterfinals along with second-seeded Tom Kellogg of Darien and, third-seeded Barry Judge of Weston. In doubles action, the most exciting' matches of the day were provided byj fifth-seeded Phil Craft and Doug Russell of Roger Ludlowe who sneaked past Mike Ruotuolo and Vince Branstein of Guilford; 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 in second round action, then1 lost a tough, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 decision to unseeded Jeff O'Brasky and Victor Cassone of Westhill.

The final game of that match; went nine match points before Cassone and O'Brasky pulled it out. Doubles action begins today at 9 a.m. LAS VEGAS, Ocasio scored a major upset Friday night by winning a 10-round, split decision over Jimmy Young, a leading heavyweight contender. Ocasio was aggressive for much of the fight and it ap- Earently turned the bout in is favor in the eyes of two judges. David Moretti had Young winning 47-43, but Bill Kipp and Lou Tabot favored the young Puerto Rican 46-45 and 46-44, respectively.

It was the 12th straight victory for the unbeaten Ocasio, and it will give him a major boost in the heavyweight division. The immediate effect of the loss by Young, ranked No. 1 by the World Boxing Council and second by the World Boxing Association, cannot be immediately told. Young, weighing 220 and carrying a roll of fat around his middle, was once again a master of defense, but his lack of offense hurt him. Young went well to the body but did little punching to the head, except for occasional jabs.

He did throw one or two combinations to the head, but Ocasio was much more effective there. The loss, coming on a card which featured Ken Norton's WBC heavyweight title defense against Larry Holmes, was Young's seventh against 22 victories and two losses. The two judges that voted for Ocasio gave him a big lead in the early rounds, with Tabot scoring the first oour rounds for the Puerto Rican. In those early rounds, Young did look lethargic. Young had everything to lose, and he might have, at least as far as a heavyweight title shot in the near future is concerned.

Ocasio, who weighed 205, was in the position of helping his career by just looking good. He did more than that. Ali Said Eager To Test Soviets Lamp One-Hitter Leads Cubs, 5-0 I MOSCOW (AP) A Soviet newspaper quoted former world heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali Friday as saying he hopes to spar with Russian boxers "to see if they are as good as they look on television." The government newspa-; per Izvestia began building, interest in next week's visit by Ali, printing an exclusive! interview conducted at the Soviet consulate in Washing-! ton, where it said Ali had gone to receive an entry visa. not for nothing that your boxers are always in good shape," Izvestia quoted him as saying. "Your amateur boxers always beat our amateurs.

"So I want to shake their hands. And if I get the chance, I want to trade punches with them and see if they are as good as they look on television," Izvestia reported in a Russian translation of Ali's remarks. Ali, who lost his heavyweight title to Leon Spinks earlier this year and is waiting for a rematch, is due to arrive in Moscow on a goodwill tour Monday. His official hosts, the State Committee on Physical Cul ture and Sports, said Friday he is expected to stay for about 10 days, with his exact Elans to be worked out after is arrival. I Sat.

Last Sunday, Bodine was involved in a mishap with Carl "Bugsy" Stevens of Re-hoboth, in the Modified feature, and was placed last for rough riding.

Ads placed in area trade papers have advised race fans that Bodine intends to race at a New Hampshire track on Sunday. Thompson Speedway officials said they wouldn't comment on Bodine's voluntary boycott of the track. "Our actions speak for themselves. They own their equipment and can race whereev-er they wish," advised Thompson racing director Carl Merrill. Other top area drivers including Fred DeSarro, Ron Bouchard, Ed Flemke, Leo Clear, Ray Miller, S.J.
