Iwnl Fri.,June28,1974 -Junior Editors'Quiz on- 13 LOS ANGELES (AP) - A high-pressure campaign that includes threats of lease cancellations is being exerted by several major oil companies to get their dealers to sell more gasoline, the Los Angeles Times reported . The paper said the campaign was being waged despite public appeals by the companies urging consumers to conserve energy. The Times said the oil companies rejected pleas from dealers for a reduction in wholesale prices to spur gasoline sales and called, instead, for the dealers to cut their profit margin by lowering retail prices. Company officials questioned were quoted as saying they were still in support of energy conservation measures but wanted to insure that dealers sell their full gasoline allocations. "We're not trying to promote the increased use of gasoline," said Dennis Gilchrist, marketing manager in California of Gulf Oil Corp. "We just want to sell what we're entitled to under the federal regulations." Some officials said achieving this may require dealers to maintain longer working hours and stay open on Sundays. At the height of the energy crisis, many dealers responded to President Nixon's appeal to shut down on Sundays and they have continued the practice. "Shell wants us to sell, sell, sell," said one Shell dealer, quoted by the Times. "The representative wants to know if you're selling the allocation. Then he asks what your hours of operation are and suggests that you stay open longer to sell the gasoline. Then he will say something like, 'Let me remind you of your lease obligation.'" A Shell spokesman denied the company was pressuring its dealers. "We are stiU telling people to conserve energy," the spokesman said. "If the Arabs cut back on production, we'll see lines again. This is the first I've heard of any pressure on the dealers to sell more gasoline. The only way the dealers can sell their allocations is to keep proper hours of operations." The Times said Texaco, the Impeachment resolution is issued LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) The policy-making body of the United Presbyterian Church has endorsed the use of the impeachment process "as a just means of resolving for the nation the current governmental crisis (Watergate)." The 1,200-word impeachment statement approved overwhelmingly by the 725 commissioners at the conclusion of the 10-day 186th General Assembly did not refer to President Nixon by name. The statement, entitled "Watergate: A Moral Crisis," said, in part: "In our public life we have seen officials, including the President of the United States, openly endorsing the reprehensible principle that the end justifies the means." The Rev. Robert C. Lamar of Albany, N.Y., moderator of the General Assembly, said the statement is "insisting that impeachment is the only responsible way to resolve the (Watergate) issue." The commissioners also approved unanimously a motion to begin local study of proposed reunion with the denomination's southern branch, the 900,000-member Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (Southern). The two branches of Presbyterianism were divided by the Civil War. There are 2.8 million persons in the northern denomination. The earliest the two churches could be reunited is 1977. Thames tributary QUESTION: Whin can ymi It-It mi.- uhi>ul uuicksanti'' * * * ANSWI-R: Quicksand is usually ;i mass of loose sand saturated with water and shifting in such a way that it will not hold any weight on its surface. There is a bed of clay under quicksand which prevents the moisture from draining out of the sand. Sometimes quicksand is really a mixture of pebbles, sand and mud. It is usually found near the mouths of rivers and along seaeoasts The moisture in the quicksand comes from the body of water near it. It is very deceiving in appearance, since it looks like the tirm sand of the same area. [here is much supers!itution connected with quicksand. Tales are told about men and animals who were sucked down by it and disappeared. Many lives have been lost in quicksand because of panic. A person caught in it should try to lall on his back with arms extended as if he were floating in water. Since quicksand contains much water, a person can float on it until lie reaches firm ground.
