He was fired from The Republican in 1969 after he ordered a list of the Vietnam war dead from the Water-bury area printed in The Republican on a Vietnam Moratorium Day. In talks and interviews shortly after that incident, Knox spoke in favor of subjecting reporting, in which reporters would write about their own opinions and emotional reactions to the news. He was hired as a reporter by the York (Pa.) Gazette and Daily, a newspaper with a reputation for subjective and left-wing reporting. The Gazette then was losing circulation and Knox Names Given In Two Deaths Over Weekend Hartford police Monday identified two of three persons who died Saturday in the city of apparently natural causes, including one whose body was guarded by her three dogs when police found her.

He said the papers' readers, many of them conservative Pennsylvania Dutch, simply could not accept the Page 1 opinions of the Gazette's reporters.
